📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Kupets-Molodets
- 🌍 Origin: A highly productive commercial Russian variety developed and distributed by the Aelita seed company. The name roughly translates to “Fine Merchant” or “Brave Merchant”.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate (bush). The seed packet claims it grows up to 3.3 feet (1 m), but in a greenhouse, it frequently stretches up to 4.5 feet (1.4 m). Performs exceptionally well both indoors and outdoors.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Classic red beefsteaks that are incredibly large for a determinate plant. Average weight ranges from 10.5-14 oz (300-400 g), but they routinely push past 1.1-1.3 lbs (500-600 g), with the largest recorded in this thread hitting 1.5 lbs (719 g). The flesh is very dense and meaty.
- 👅 Flavor & Use: Good classic tomato flavor. Due to their massive size and dense texture, they are perfect for slicing into salads or processing down into rich juices and sauces.
Another interesting variety from Aelita. Extremely worthy!
Determinate, claimed height is up to 3.3 feet (1 m). In the greenhouse, it grew taller, up to about 4.5 feet (1.4 m). I planted 2 bushes, pruned each to 2 stems. It is a mid-season variety, incredibly productive, the fruits are uniform and a beautiful red color. The taste is good, perfect for salads, juices, and sauces. The average weight really is 14 oz (400 g) and up, I had plenty of fruits weighing 1.1 lbs (500 g) and 1.3 lbs (600 g), the absolute largest was 1.5 lbs (719 g).
It’s a fantastic variety, very much worth your attention. It’s not just a decorative novelty for looks, it is a seriously good workhorse.
I planted this variety too. Elya (elja1968) shared the seeds with me 🙏, with the highest recommendations. It grew out large for me outdoors in the dirt just like advertised, but a bit smaller than Yulia’s, roughly 10.5-12.3 oz (300-350 g). The yield was great. The flesh is dense and tasty. I will definitely repeat it outdoors. Turns out Aelita does have some genuinely good varieties.
