Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zones 3-4 Experience)
Det, early and super productive. Grew it in the greenhouse, tucked right at the feet of my tall vines. The bushes stayed around 24 inches (60 cm) and were absolutely loaded. Fruits are red, finger-like icicles. Thick-walled and meaty, but definitely not dry. Sweet with very few seeds.
Has its downsides though, it’s a heavy drinker and highly prone to BER. But despite all that, it became a favorite and is definitely staying in my collection.
What a beauty! How does it hold up for canning whole? Anybody tried it?
Wasn’t exactly smothered in fruit for me this year in 2026. Grew outside as a det, reached about 20-24 inches (50-60 cm). Fruits are pretty firm, making them good for transport.
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Issues
- 🌿 Plant: Determinate, early season. Stays very compact at 20-24 inches (50-60 cm). Highly suitable for underplanting beneath taller indeterminate vines to maximize greenhouse space.
- 🍅 Fruit: Red, elongated “finger” or “icicle” shape. Very firm, thick-walled, and meaty with a low seed count, but retains enough juice to avoid being overly dry.
- 📈 Yield: Generally a heavy yielder, though performance can drop depending on the season and outdoor weather.
- 👅 Taste & Use: Sweet and pleasant flavor. Due to its firm texture and shape, it is an excellent candidate for whole-fruit canning and holds up very well during transport.
- ⚠️ Issues: Highly susceptible to Blossom End Rot (BER). The plant requires very consistent, heavy watering to prevent calcium lockout in the developing fruits.
