Siberian Giant Red Beefsteak Tomato Review

Rate this tomato

Quick Summary of Siberian Giant (Sibirskiy Velikan)

  • 🌍 Origin: A classic commercial Siberian variety (this is the traditional red version, not to be confused with Siberian Giant Pink).
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, vigorous, and powerful. It grows to about 1.5 – 1.7 meters (5-5.5 ft) tall and performs well in both greenhouses and open ground.
  • ⚠️ Growing Tip: Because of the sheer mass of the fruit it produces, this variety is a “heavy feeder.” It requires extra-strong staking and enhanced fertilization during the fruit-set period to reach its full potential.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Bright red, oblate (flattened) beefsteaks. They are massive, usually weighing 300-500g (10-18 oz), with some individual fruits reaching up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs). A major aesthetic bonus is that they ripen evenly with no green shoulders at the stem.
  • 👅 Flavor & Culinary Use: The flesh is sweet, very meaty, and contains few seeds. While excellent sliced fresh for salads, growers highly recommend it for processing into high-quality, rich tomato juice.

Description from the seed packet:
A highly productive mid-season variety for open ground and greenhouses. The bush is powerful, 1.5-1.7 m (5-5.5 ft) tall. The fruits are large, weighing 300-500g (10-18 oz), with some up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs), oblate in shape, bright red with no green spot at the stem, sweet, meaty, with few seeds. Used fresh and for the preparation of high-quality tomato products. The variety requires staking and enhanced nutrition (heavy feeder) during the fruit formation period.
