Quick Summary of Svart
- 🌍 Origin & Name: A rare variety circulated by Russian private seed collectors (like V. Popenko). Its exact origins are unknown, but the word “Svart” translates to “Black” in Swedish and Norwegian, strongly suggesting Scandinavian or Northern European roots.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), reaching about 1.5 meters (5 ft) when grown in a greenhouse.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Round, dark brown/mahogany cocktail-sized tomatoes. They typically weigh up to 100g (3.5 oz). Note: They are prone to cracking/splitting if left on the vine to overripen.
- 👅 Flavor: Highly rated by growers. The taste is excellent—very sweet, with a juicy and meaty texture.
- 🛡️ Disease Resistance: A massive bonus for greenhouse growers: this variety displays excellent natural resistance to Cladosporium (Tomato Leaf Mold), a common and destructive greenhouse fungal disease.
