Terion Tomato Review

Quick Summary of Terion

  • 🌍 Origin: A commercial variety, heavily marketed as an ultra-productive canning tomato. However, real-world grower reviews are quite mixed.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate (bush). It grows very compact and requires absolutely no pruning (suckering). Perfect for growing outdoors in open ground.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Bright red, round-oval (plum/paste) tomatoes of medium size, generally weighing 80-100g (3-3.5 oz). The fruits are notoriously dense with incredibly thick skin. They do not crack or drop from the vine.
  • 👅 Flavor & Texture: This is strictly a processing tomato. The flesh is extremely dense and hard. The skin is so thick that growers joke it feels more like “armor.”
  • 🎯 Best Uses: Marketed for canning, but beware: the skin remains very tough even after pickling in marinade. It may be better suited for peeled canning or making thick pastes.
  • 📈 Yield vs. Expectations: The commercial seed packet promises up to 70 fruits per plant. However, forum members report that the actual yield is nowhere near that number, with some calling the harvest “a joke.”
📜 Original Seed Packet Translation:
“Mid-early variety. The plant is determinate, compact. Fruits are round-oval, bright red, medium-sized, weighing 80-100g, do not crack and do not drop. About 70 fruits form on a single plant. For fresh consumption and canning.”

Seeds were from SVETLA.

Mine grew outdoors in open ground. Determinate. I didn’t prune (sucker) it. According to the description, it was supposed to be highly productive, up to 70 fruits. I didn’t get anywhere near that many. It’s a variety strictly for canning; the fruits are dense and store very well.

I planted it outdoors in open ground. It turned out to be a late-season, tiny little bush. There weren’t many fruits, and even the ones that did grow were small. Overall, the harvest was a joke.

I didn’t like a single thing about it.

When canned, the fruits retain their extreme density. It’s a variety for those who like to actually “bite” into their canned tomatoes rather than slurp them 😄. The skin… no, it’s not even a skin… it’s some kind of… ??? extremely thick armor. I didn’t like it at all when canned in marinade. Maybe there’s a way to can it without the skin.
