Quick Summary of Tsao Fen

  • 🌍 Origin: A collector’s variety sourced from Russian heirloom growers (originating from the Logunov collection). The name suggests Asian origins (often transliterated as Cao Fen or Tsao Fen).
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), reaching about 2 meters (6.5 ft) when grown in a greenhouse.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Medium-sized fruits, typically ranging from 100 g to 250 g (3.5–8.8 oz). They have a beautiful, almost transparent pale yellow color, and many develop a distinctive pink blush (cap) on the blossom end.
  • 👅 Flavor: Very good, sweet taste with notably low acidity. Perfect for those who prefer mild, sweet tomatoes.
  • Maturity: Early to mid-early. Many growers note it as one of the very first to ripen in their gardens.
  • 📈 Yield: Good productivity, known to set fruit especially heavily on the lower trusses.

Seeds are from collector Logunov. The bush is indeterminate, up to 2 m (6.5 ft) in the greenhouse. Mid-early.

The yield is good, especially on the lower trusses. They are a transparent-yellow color, and a pink cap (blush) appears on the top of some of them.

Fruit size is medium, with some specimens reaching up to 250 g (8.8 oz). Good taste, low acidity.

It was my very earliest variety. Quite productive, but of course, not as heavy-yielding as Tanya’s. My weights were about 100 grams (3.5 oz), maybe a little more. Very tasty.
