📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Verna
- 🌍 Origin: A fantastic Eastern European heirloom variety. Seeds are widely passed around among collectors (like Lena Danko mentioned in this thread).
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). It’s a mid-season variety that does great in a greenhouse or hoop house. Growers recommend pruning it to 2 or 3 main stems for the best harvest.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Gorgeous oval/plum-shaped tomatoes that range from deep yellow to bright orange. They are very uniform, weighing around 2.5-3 oz (70-90 g). The fruits are dense and meaty.
- 👅 Flavor & Uses: Firm flesh with a delicate, mild flavor that gets noticeably sweeter as the season cools down in the fall. Great for fresh eating, canning, and they have an incredibly long shelf life on the kitchen counter.
- ⏳ Harvest Window: Produces heavily over a long period. You can keep picking sweet maters right off the vine well into late September.
A wonderful mid-season indet (indeterminate). Grew it under glass in the greenhouse this year, pruned the plants to 2 or 3 stems (I had a few of them going). Huge thanks to our very own Lena Danko for kindly sharing the seeds 🙌
It really blew me away with its yield. It kept setting full trusses of firm, oval-shaped, bright orange tomatoes. Weight was about 2.5-3 oz (70-90 g), all uniform and perfectly sized. The flesh is dense with a delicate flavor, though that natural sweetness really popped more toward the end of the season.
It’s a super productive and promising variety. The harvest window is really long, we were still munching on juicy, sweet maters straight off the bush in late September.
The fruits also hold up real well indoors and can sit on the counter for a long time without going bad or losing quality.
Hands down my absolute favorite out of all the yellow plum tomatoes. It’s a heavy yielder, the fruits are uniform, and they taste great.
