Zolotoy Byk (Golden Bull) Tomato Review

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Zolotoy Byk (Golden Bull)

  • 🌍 Origin: A Russian commercial heirloom released by the Biotekhnika seed company. The name translates to “Golden Bull”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Regular leaf, but it possesses the classic “wispy” oxheart foliage. The leaves are typically pale green and droopy, making the plant look frail even when perfectly healthy.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, meaty, lemon-yellow to orange oxhearts. Most fruits develop a beautiful pink or red starburst in the core and a pink blush on the blossom end when fully ripe. Weights usually range from 12.3 oz (350 g) up to a massive 21 oz (600 g).
  • 👅 Flavor: Highly rated dessert tomato. Very sweet, low acidity, with a buttery and grainy texture. Very few seeds. Excellent for fresh eating and salads.

This is a variety I highly recommend to everyone 👍 😋. Yellow-orange, large, incredibly delicious fruits with a real dessert-like flavor and very few seeds. The flesh is soft but not watery, very meaty, and they practically don’t lose any flavor if you have to ripen them off the vine indoors. The shelf life is easily around 10 days. I will definitely be planting this one every single year. It’s an indeterminate bush, I grew it to two stems in the greenhouse. Seeds were from Biotekhnika.

I really liked it too. Mine grew as hearts, but almost flat. Like, not elongated at all. My seeds were from Valya Redko.

Mine is also a heart, it’s just a bit hard to tell from that specific photo 🙂.

I grew it quite a long time ago, seeds were also from Biotekhnika. The main characteristics completely match yours, only mine weren’t orange, they were yellow, almost a light-yellow, and some of them had a small pink blush on the inside. I loved the taste too. Unfortunately, I didn’t take any photos back then.

I tried starting Golden Bull from Biotekhnika this year. Out of 6 seeds, absolutely zero germinated. I still have the packet, so I’ll try sowing the rest next year, maybe I’ll get lucky.

I was gifted some seeds under the name “Yellow Bull”, but the description perfectly matches Golden Bull: large, heart-shaped, slicer, tasty/sweet. Writing about it here, correct me if I’m wrong. Growing it in the greenhouse. As of today, this Bull has pumped out the largest tomatoes in my garden. I planted two bushes total (germination was 2 out of 2). The second bush threw a double truss right off the bat. The photo is from a week ago, the next trusses are already waist-high and above.

Yield-wise, this Bull is severely outperforming another oxheart I’m growing right now, Honey Spas. Even though the Bull’s bushes are much weaker-looking, and as a seedling, it looked downright ugly. I’m growing them to 3 or 3.5 stems. The tomatoes are just starting to take on some warm color, so I’ll report back on the taste later.

This seemed like the absolute best tasting tomato out of everything I tried this summer. I really loved it. Large orange-yellow fruits, and some of them have a red blush inside when you slice them. It’s staying in my permanent collection forever, I’ll definitely repeat it and I highly recommend it to everyone. Buttery, juicy, with a very pleasant texture. I grow outdoors in open ground. Seeds from Biotekhnika. Photos coming later.

Mine is from Redko’s seed stock. Compared to the rest of my plants, it set a pretty good amount of large hearts. We ate the first one yesterday. The color is lemon-yellow, though I was expecting orange. Golden Bull is in the center of the basket in the photo. It’s hard to judge the taste honestly, because the summer weather has been absolute garbage.

Mine turned out to be very early and a heavy yielder. Loved it, will absolutely plant it next year.

Does it have potato leaves? And is there a pink blush on it (like on the blossom end)?

The leaf is totally regular. The bush is average in vigor, nothing really stands out about it 🙂 The tomatoes didn’t have any pink spots either.

Here is my only photo of Golden Bull. The rest didn’t survive long enough to be photographed next to Emerald Apple lol.

My largest tomato weighed 20.4-21 oz (580-600 g), but the bulk of them were around 12.3 oz (350 g). The color was lemon-yellow, and when sliced open, you could see a pink tongue/blush inside – every single fruit had it. Very pleasant, slightly grainy flesh, not watery at all. Balanced taste, no excess acidity, very consistent. Not a lot of seeds, but there were some in every tomato.

P.S. The leaves on the Bull were the very first in my garden to get sick 🤷‍♀️ I’ll definitely be repeating it next year, probably just one bush. Prolific variety 🙂

And it has regular foliage too, right? And the color is a sort of faded pale green, regardless of how much you fertilize it?

Yeah… how did you know that?

Because compared to all my other varieties, the leaves on the Bull (and my Ildi plants) were so much lighter and paler than the rest. Not a dark or lush green, but more of a faded, soft green color 🤷‍♀️

Mine looked completely wimpy and stunted too. I actually started individually feeding it trying to get rid of that pale color. I’ll search around and see if I can find this Bull for sale here, but I didn’t see it last year.

Grew this variety again in the greenhouse using my own saved seeds (originally from Biotekhnika). It’s a wimpy-looking indeterminate plant. The fruits are yellow hearts, and when fully ripe, a reddish tie appears inside and a red starburst shows on the blossom end. Weight 12.3-17.6 oz (350-500 g).

My Golden Bull in the greenhouse turned out to be a heavy yielder and grew to about 6.5 feet (2 m) tall. The fruits are quite large, sweet, and meaty. Has a red starburst when cut open. A few specific fruits had a slight tartness to them, possibly due to cold snaps we had.

I grew it in the greenhouse, haven’t planted it for about three years now. The leaf is thin and long, regular (not potato leaf). The bush is wimpy. Pale yellow color with a pink nose and a pink blush inside. The shape was oblate with ribbed shoulders. Sweet with a slight tartness. The flesh is slippery like a persimmon, which is honestly why I don’t plant it anymore. But I gave some away to friends and they really liked it. It makes a tasty juice, just a really weird color.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: Wispy Oxheart Foliage
Throughout this thread, you will notice multiple growers complaining that the Golden Bull plant looked “wimpy”, “frail”, or had pale, droopy leaves. This is a very common genetic trait in heart-shaped heirloom tomatoes known as “wispy foliage”. New growers often panic, thinking their plant is dying or suffering from a severe nitrogen deficiency (like Galka did), but this is perfectly normal! Oxhearts are notorious for looking like weeping willows while simultaneously pumping out massive, 1-pound tomatoes.
