1884 Tomato Review & Photos

Share your rating

🍅 Quick take: 1884 is an indeterminate, historic American heirloom that produces massive, juicy pink beefsteaks, often exceeding 12 oz (350 g). The vines are vigorous and strong enough to support the heavy fruit. Growers praise its outstanding yields and reliability, noting that it produces beautifully even in poor summers or partially shaded spots. The flavor is highly rated, described as having a good, classic tomato taste with a nice hint of sweetness. The only noted drawback is a tendency to drop blossoms during extreme heatwaves and a thin skin that can be prone to cracking. Full summary ↓

Couldn’t find this variety in the catalog either. You can search by letters (Tags), but how do you search by numbers? 🤷‍♀️ If there’s already a thread for this, please merge me into it!

Very productive, low-maintenance indeterminate variety. Tall vine, in the greenhouse it quickly reached the roof ridge and basically started growing back down)) Fruits are pink, juicy, large, with good flavor. At one point, the fruits had a really nice hint of sweetness to them. All the tomatoes are excellent quality and they store reasonably well.

🙂 Ordered my seeds from Kulik. His description says: juicy, large, tasty fruits. Very productive, unfussy, tall variety. I’ll add this myself – the single biggest tomato of this entire terrible tomato season grew on this exact plant:

I’d also definitely highlight how unfussy and productive 1884 is.

In the greenhouse, it was a mid-season ripener. That photo was taken in early August.

Wait, there’s a yellow version too? 😲 How did that happen? I thought this variety was a legend…

They already opened a thread for it //www.tomat-pomidor.com/newforum/index.php?topic=7947.0 Online they say Darrell Merrell crossed 1884 with an unknown variety.

I am super happy with this variety. Despite having a terrible summer, it just kept pumping out fruit; I had to tie up the trusses so they wouldn’t snap. Definite candidate for 2017.

1884 has a permanent spot in my garden now. I plant it every single year. This past season it rewarded me with a great harvest as usual, even though the vine was growing in the shade of the grapevines.

I like this variety, grown it twice now. Yield was just average during the heatwaves, it dropped some blossoms. The fruits are very beautiful and tasty. Skin is thin, so it can be prone to cracking.

Variety 1884 – indeterminate, the plant is robust and fully capable of carrying the heavy harvest on its shoulders. Fruits are large, weighing 12.3 oz (350 g) and up, raspberry-pink color.
Flesh is firm and juicy. Good tomato flavor.
