Quick Summary of African Queen

  • 🌍 Origin: A well-known Canadian heirloom variety, highly popular among Russian growers under the translated name “Afrikanskaya Koroleva” (Африканская королева).
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall) with potato leaf foliage. The vines can be slightly spindly or wispy, but they are still highly productive. Growers often prune it to a single stem.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, pink, oblate (flattened-round) beefsteaks. They are massive, typically weighing 300-800g (10.5-28 oz / 0.6-1.7 lbs). The flesh is very dense, meaty, and contains few seeds.
  • 👅 Flavor: Sweet, meaty, and exceptionally delicious. A top-tier flavor profile for fresh eating.
  • Maturity & Yield: Mid-season variety. Peak harvest usually hits in August. Yields are generally high, though it can occasionally miss fruit sets in the middle trusses if weather conditions aren’t ideal.

A large-fruited tomato variety. I pruned it to a single stem. The bush was wispy, but it produced well. The fruits are meaty and delicious. Average yield. Potato leaf.

African Queen tomato (Canada) is a tall, mid-season variety. Potato leaf. The fruits are pink, oblate, meaty, with few seeds, weighing 300-800 g (10.5-28 oz / 0.6-1.7 lbs). Seeds were from Redko.

The variety is mid-season. The main harvest was in August. The fruits are all large, meaty, and sweet. The yield is top-notch! I really liked it!

I also grew it 2 years ago. I liked the taste, but the yield wasn’t great for me. It set the first and last trusses, but there was a gap in the middle (blossom drop), though I blame myself for that. I want to grow it again.
