Zolotye Kupola (Golden Domes) Tomato Reviews

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Zolotye Kupola (Golden Domes)

  • 🌍 Origin: A very popular commercial Russian heirloom developed by the Siberian Garden (SibSad) seed company. The name translates to “Golden Domes”, referencing the shape of Russian Orthodox church roofs.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, but often acts semi-determinate depending on the climate. Typically reaches about 4 to 5 feet (1.2-1.5 m) tall. It sets fruit early but can sometimes stop growing after pushing out 3-4 heavy trusses.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, beautiful yellow-orange oxhearts. Lower trusses will sometimes throw round, non-pointed fruits. Meaty, with weights commonly ranging from 9 oz to 20 oz (250-570 g). Warning: They have a very short shelf life once ripe.
  • 👅 Flavor: Sweet, meaty, and very low in acidity. Some growers report fruity, citrusy notes. They can get a bit bland or mealy if overwatered or left on the counter too long.

Golden Domes was in the catalog on the old forum. I liked the variety. Seeds are from SibSad, they germinated well. Grew it outdoors in the dirt with almost no pruning. The yield was average. The heaviest tomato was 20 oz (570 g). No cracking at all. Good tomato flavor with a little sweetness. The bush was about 3.3 feet (1 m) tall, maybe a bit taller. I picked them half-ripe and they sat indoors for 20 days until fully ripe. A solid 4 out of 5 rating. Keeping it in my collection.

One of my absolute favorites this year. Large, delicious tomatoes, plus it’s an early season workhorse. The fruits on the first truss turned out round, but higher up they were heart-shaped, just as they should be. Grew them in open ground. I got my biggest fruits off this specific variety.

I grew Golden Domes back in 2012. Seeds were from Siberian Garden. Grown outdoors in the dirt. It’s a very prolific variety, and the weight of my largest fruit was 19.4 oz (550 g).

My Golden Domes grew in the greenhouse. The plant got up to 5-6 feet (1.5-1.8 m) tall. The fruits are large, somewhat sweet but a bit bland, and the yield was average. You can definitely classify this as an early season variety. During the extremely hot summer of 2013, some of the fruits grew deformed.

Seeds were from SibSad. I was really happy with the yield.

I grew this variety again this season. The yield turned out worse than last year. It just lacked something this time around.

SibSad seeds, a friend shared them with me. It grew to about 4-4.2 feet (120-130 cm) outdoors in the open ground. Heavy yielder, sets every truss without dropping blossoms, and the plant forked on its own right after the first truss. Mid-early, or honestly I’d even call it early, judging by the fact that it was the very first of my large slicers to ripen. Orange-yellow fruits shaped like a slightly elongated heart. I had 5 on the first truss, and 4 on the second truss, but larger. The third and fourth trusses have 5 smaller fruits each, not sure if they’ll have time to ripen in our climate 🙁 . Juicy, meaty, sweet with a slight tang, and it leaves a little fruity citrus aftertaste. Really liked it, definitely keeping it on my grow list.

I grew Golden Domes from SibSad in the greenhouse in 2015. Early and prolific. Large, meaty fruits, though mine were round instead of heart-shaped. Compared to Golden Königsberg, it seemed a bit bland. And after sitting on the counter for a bit, it quickly turned to mush and got starchy/mealy. Most of them were eaten in salads, and the overripe ones made an excellent orange adjika (salsa). The consistency for the sauce was great, not watered down at all. A solid variety.

Last season I planted Golden Domes from Angelina’s seed stock. The fruits were heart-shaped, sweet, and meaty. One specimen grew to 26 oz (740 g).

I really liked the taste. Large oxhearts, and when you cut them open, there is a pink blush at the blossom end. The flesh texture is smooth and “grape-like”, tender, and juicy. The flavor is slightly sweet, really good, not bland at all. The skin isn’t thick, but the shoulders are a bit tough. Small seed cavities and very few seeds.

I really like Golden Domes. It’s early, yields heavy, and the fruits are beautiful hearts, large and tasty. The only downside is that it sets two or three trusses really well, and then the plant quickly dries up and quits on you. But maybe that’s just in my garden.

Even though this is a long-time popular variety, I’m growing it for the first time. Average yield, fruits are large on both the bottom and upper trusses. Heart-shaped, and when fully ripe, a slight pink “cap” appears on the top end. Taste is good. And yeah, it was early for me too.

Seeds from Tomatanya. One of the earliest in my 2018 garden. The hearts aren’t overly pointy, they have more of a blunt tip. The flavor was closer to bland for me.

Very tasty tomato with absolutely no acidity. Heavy yielder. The only downside is that it has zero shelf life after picking. The moment it gets ripe, you have to eat it. So far, it’s among my favorites.

I grew this variety outdoors in open ground in 2019. I bought the seedlings at a farmers market (they grew them from SibSad seeds). I liked it. A late blight epidemic meant I only got to harvest the first few trusses off these plants (about 2.2-2.8 lbs or 1-1.3 kg per bush, average fruit weight was 10.5 oz or 300 g). But even that is a good result and proves you can successfully grow this outdoors in the dirt.

Poltava, grown in open ground. Bushes were about 4 feet (120 cm) tall. Not a ton of fruit, average size was 8.8-12.3 oz (250-350 g). The photos show Golden Domes from two different seed vendors. Both turned out very tasty, moderately juicy, with a nice sweet and sour balance. Even the one that ripened light yellow.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: Russian Seed Sources
In this thread, you’ll see mentions of “SibSad”, “Angelina”, and “Tomatanya”.
SibSad (Siberian Garden) is a massive commercial seed company in Russia, famous worldwide for breeding incredibly cold-tolerant, early-producing giant heirloom tomatoes.
Angelina & Tomatanya are private heirloom seed collectors and vendors on the Russian tomato forums. When a grower mentions getting seeds from them, it usually means the seed stock has been heavily selected for purity, huge size, and vigor compared to standard commercial packets.
