📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Ispanskiy Shokolad (Spanish Chocolate)
- 🌍 Origin: An unofficial “folk” variety that originated from seed swaps on Russian social media. The name translates directly to “Spanish Chocolate”.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), reaching up to 6.5 feet (2 m). Growers report mixed fruiting habits. Some get a long, continuous harvest, while others say it dumps its fruit all at once.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Stunning, heavily ribbed dark tomatoes. They can vary in color from deep red to mahogany brown. They feature a thick skin, which gives them an unusually long shelf life for an heirloom.
- 👅 Flavor: Sweet, meaty, and classic rich black tomato flavor. Depending on growing conditions, the flesh can sometimes lean on the drier side.
Vavladi: “Spanish Chocolate, just like Kellogg’s Breakfast, took its sweet time growing fruits. But then… pure joy. It pumped out a sea of delicious, juicy, meaty tomatoes. By the way, they have a thick skin like Chocolate Stripes and keep really well.”
Dosya: “Spanish Chocolate. I had two plants. One turned out red and the other was more brown. 4 trusses total. Gorgeous looking tomato, sweet, but a little on the dry side.”
We got our seeds from Nadine. The seed packet noted that the name was unofficial. Is this just floating around between us? A forum-exclusive variety? The fruit is absolutely beautiful and ribbed. Our bush grew up to 6.5 feet (2 m), and the taste is excellent for a dark tomato. It wasn’t a long producer for us though. It just dumped its whole harvest at once and called it quits.
This variety originally came from OK, it’s just a folk name.

Elena, this is a variety from Odnoklassniki. Valyusha (vavladi) shared it with me later on.
For me, it was actually the complete opposite. It produced for a really long time. I was pulling these plants out among the very last ones, but they did start ripening a bit on the late side.
Svetlana, what a beautiful tomato you grew! Do you happen to have a picture of a sliced one by any chance?
In this thread, users mention the variety came from “OK” (Odnoklassniki) and has a “folk name”. Odnoklassniki is a massive Russian social media platform similar to Facebook. Many amazing unregistered heirloom tomatoes get discovered, traded, and named by backyard gardeners in groups on that platform before making their way to dedicated tomato forums. A “folk” or “conditional” name simply means it’s a community-named heirloom rather than a commercially registered seed line!
