Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zone 4 Experience)
My seeds came from Angelina.
Here is the variety description:
Stands out for its much larger fruit, tipping the scales up to 2.2 lbs (1 kg). Surface striping is nearly absent, ripening to an understated glowing pink on the outside, but slices open into a breathtakingly gorgeous, exceptionally delicious bicolor. Mid-season, tall indeterminate vine. Wonderfully sweet with a bold, memorable aroma and flavor. One of the prettiest, tastiest, and most productive varieties around!
You can honestly only talk about this variety in superlatives! A heavy-yielding stunner, a true fruit-like tomato. An absolute joy in the garden!
Echoing all the high praise for this tomato!
Huge shoutout to @Angelina, @ElenaO, and @Mila for the seeds and stellar recommendations, thank you! 🙏
Under my conditions, both the taste and yield for a bicolor are top tier 👍 I have been searching for a long time for a variety where authentic bicolor flavor and heavy cropping actually come in a single package.
Full Summary: Plant Vigor, Fruit Size & Flavor Profile
- 🌿 Plant Architecture: Vigorous indeterminate vine with robust regular foliage. Requires strong trellising and careful pruning to 1 or 2 leaders to support massive individual beefsteaks.
- 🍅 Fruit Size & Appearance: Huge, smooth, oblate beefsteaks that can tip the scales up to 2.2 lbs (1 kg), with typical fruit running 14-25 oz (400-700 g). The exterior is a soft, warm pink with faint golden hues and minimal outer striping.
- 🔪 Interior Flesh: Slices open to reveal an extraordinary marbling of radiant yellow, orange, and deep raspberry-pink. The meat is solid, buttery, and dense with tiny seed pockets.
- 👅 Flavor Profile: Outstanding tropical sweetness with virtually no harsh acidity. Growers describe it as a true “fruit-like” tomato with a rich, lasting berry-melon aftertaste.
- 📈 Yield Superiority: Solves the common heirloom bicolor problem of light sets; delivers continuous, heavy fruit production under unheated greenhouse cover.
- 🌎 Proven Hardiness: Thrives and ripens fully in short-season continental northern conditions (Central Russia, USDA Zone 4).
Heirloom enthusiasts are well aware of the trade-off that often comes with classic yellow-red bicolors (like Pineapple, Striped German, or Big Rainbow): they produce some of the sweetest, most complex flesh in the tomato world, but they are notoriously finicky, setting only a few fruit per vine in shorter northern summers.
Mermaid stands out among European and North American collectors because it bypasses this issue. It pairs the colossal size and low-acid tropical brix of vintage bicolors with the aggressive fruit-setting stamina typically found only in modern market slicers. Additionally, its exterior appearance is deceptive: rather than having loud, gaudy surface stripes, the skin remains a quiet, soft pink until sliced, unveiling a brilliant stained-glass interior.
