Sweet Carneros Pink Tomato Review

Quick Summary of Sweet Carneros Pink

  • 🌍 Origin: Bred by the famous Brad Gates of Wild Boar Farms (USA, California).
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). Growers note that the plant is incredibly healthy, vigorous, and highly productive. It makes a highly decorative addition to any greenhouse or garden.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Small, round, pink cocktail-sized tomatoes adorned with striking gold/yellow stripes. They typically weigh up to 100g (3.5 oz).
  • 👅 The “Sweet” Controversy: Despite having the word “Sweet” in its name, Russian growers uniformly report that this variety is surprisingly tart or even overwhelmingly sour in their climates. This may be due to the lack of intense Californian sun required for this specific variety to develop its sugars.
  • 🥫 Culinary Use: The fruits are the perfect uniform size for whole-fruit canning and look beautiful in jars, though their thin skin means they are prone to splitting during the preservation process.

Sweet Carneros Pink (USA). Breeder is Brad Gates. Indeterminate. A very productive and decorative variety. The fruits are round, pink with lovely golden stripes, very tasty (according to the description), weighing up to 100 g (3.5 oz). A rare variety!

For me, this variety was indeed very productive and beautiful! The tomatoes are a bit tart/sour, but they look beautiful when canned/pickled, and they are the perfect jar format. The skin is a bit on the thin side, so they can crack/split in the jars.

A beautiful little tomato, but sour. I will not be saving seeds from it.

Mine is very, very sour. I don’t want it at all anymore. I almost feel like ripping the bush completely out. I honestly don’t know what to do with it. It is a very beautiful, healthy, and highly productive bush. The tomatoes are uniform and beautiful. But it’s pure acid! I really wonder, why on earth does it have such a name?
