📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Alpinog (Альпиног)
- 🌍 Origin: A fantastic yellow heirloom tomato. The seeds in this thread trace back to the collection of Evgeny Fech, a well-known tomato breeder and collector from the Altai region of Russia.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). An incredibly vigorous and powerful plant that can easily reach 2 meters (6.5 ft) in height. Performs beautifully both outdoors in the open garden and in greenhouses.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Yellow plum or “icicle” shaped fruits. They grow in massive, heavy trusses of 8 to 11 tomatoes. The flesh is dense and slightly on the dry/meaty side, with very little loose gel.
- 👅 Flavor & Uses: While the flavor is good for fresh eating, its true calling is canning and processing. Because of its dense, meaty texture, it holds its shape perfectly in jars without turning to mush.
- ⏳ Storage: Late-season harvests picked slightly underripe have an excellent shelf life and keep very well in storage boxes.
I got these seeds second-hand; they originally came from Evgeny Fech.
Indeterminate, the plant is quite vigorous, I pruned it to two leaders (stems). The yellow fruits are clustered in trusses of 8-11. They are slightly on the dry/meaty side, and the taste was good even in the terrible “non-tomato” summer of 2012.
Renata, I’m adding photos of Alpinog grown by Lyuba-Dosya. You shared seedlings with her, and as a result, the Alpinog variety turned out to be an absolute record-holder for yield for her:
A cute yellow plum/icicle. I really liked it for canning in jars; it’s quite firm and didn’t fall apart or turn to mush. The late harvest had great keeping quality in storage. Grew it to two stems, outdoors in the open garden. Height was about 2 meters (6.5 ft). Seeds from Evgeny Fech.
This variety goes into my canning jars alongside Chocolate Bunny (Shokoladnyi Zaichik) and pink Chio Chio San.
