Aquarelle (Akvarel) Tomato Review

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Aquarelle (Akvarel)

  • 🌍 Origin: A reliable Russian commercial variety. The name translates to “Watercolor”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate (short bush). Specifically, it is a “tree-type” (shtamb) dwarf with a very sturdy, thick central stem that requires minimal staking.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Red, plum-shaped paste tomatoes. They are on the smaller side but feature very thick, dense walls.
  • 👅 Flavor & Use: Sweet, juicy, yet meaty. Because of their thick walls and manageable size, they are considered an absolutely perfect tomato for whole-fruit canning and pickling.

A short-growing (determinate) variety with beautiful red plum-shaped fruits. Thanks to the thick walls and the small size of the fruits, this variety is absolutely excellent for canning. Ripening time is mid-season. The fruits are juicy-meaty and sweet.

An excellent sturdy tree-type (dwarf) variety. I had two of this type growing: this one and Tsar David. Both are stout, tree-type plants and the fruits are absolutely identical. I liked them very much.

My Aquarelle tomato grew in a poly tunnel (greenhouse). I pruned it to a single main stem because I got my variety name tags mixed up and thought it was a tall indeterminate. There were so many tomatoes on it, I never would have believed such a yield was possible 👍. I will definitely repeat it, I have a few seeds left. I didn’t take any photos and didn’t save any seeds, and now I really regret it. Seeds were from Natasha (ganga).

This year I refreshed my seeds and compared them side-by-side again: Aquarelle and Tsar David. Well, they are extremely similar. Those two and Sakharnyi (Sugary). I need to just pick one of them to keep growing.
