Aurora Blue Tomato Review: Latvian Antho Heirloom

Rate this

Quick Summary of Aurora Blue

  • 🌍 Origin: A beautiful anthocyanin variety popularized by the well-known Latvian tomato breeder and collector, Valdis Puliņš.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), reaching about 1.7–1.8 meters (5.5–6 ft). Very vigorous and productive, known to keep setting fruit right up until the first frost.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Medium-to-large slicing tomatoes weighing 100–250 g (3.5–9 oz). The base color is a striking pink, topped with deep blue/purple anthocyanin shoulders. It is highly resistant to cracking and has excellent staying power—it can hang fully ripe on the vine for a long time without dropping.
  • 👅 Flavor: Sweet, tasty, and very appealing—a true treat for lovers of “blue” tomatoes.
  • Maturity: Mid-season, but boasts an extended harvest window.

“Aurora Blue” – seeds from Valdis Puliņš. His description: “Mid-season, new tomato with anthocyanin. Fruits are pink with blue shoulders, weighing 100-250 g (3.5-9 oz), tasty, sweet, high yield. Bush height is 1.7-1.8 m (5.5-6 ft). Bears fruit until frost.”

From me: “Hangs on the vine for a long time, doesn’t drop off, and doesn’t crack.” A real handsome guy — antho tomatoes are my absolute weakness.
