My Balkoni Elo F1 (from Biotechnika) tomatoes were sown in the first days of January. I grew them indoors in 3-liter (~1-gallon) pots. They started ripening in April, but while they were indoors, they were quite sour.
In May, I transplanted them into larger buckets, and by June, I moved them completely outside into the garden. Once they were out in the sun, the flavor totally transformed—they became sweet with a fruity note! They kept producing right up until September. Anyone who walked by them would immediately stop to snack on these little tomatoes. Because of the larger pots, my bushes reached about 45-50 cm (18-20 inches) tall. 😊
I got my seeds for this variety from Inna in southern Germany. I didn’t actually sow any this year, but it volunteered itself in the exact same planter box where it grew last year.
I potted up 7 of those volunteer seedlings. They all grew to be perfectly identical, none taller than 25 cm (10 inches). Excellent fruit set, tomatoes everywhere, and very prolonged fruiting. Honestly, the flavor is strictly average. But the huge plus of this variety is that it is highly ornamental and beautiful.
You guys in Russia buy it as an “F1 Hybrid,” but over here it’s an OP (open-pollinated) variety… A very familiar story. 😉
