Black Zebra Cherry Tomato Review

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR)

  • 🌍 Origin: A striking dark-striped cherry tomato variety.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, mid-season. Interestingly, while classified as indeterminate, it behaves quite compactly. When grown outdoors in open ground, it only reached about 0.8 meters (2.6 ft) in height, making it a great candidate for smaller spaces or containers.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Tiny cherry tomatoes weighing around 15 grams (0.5 oz). They are red with prominent dark green striping. Standout feature: They have notably thick skins.
  • 👅 Flavor & Use: Has an ordinary, basic tomato flavor without any standout sweetness. Because the fruits are tiny and the skin is thick, they aren’t considered the best for fresh snacking. However, as discussed by growers below, these exact traits make them absolutely perfect for canning and pickling!
  • Yield & Climate: Highly productive. It sets fruit vigorously on all branches and unpruned suckers.

An indeterminate mid-season variety, but it is not tall. Outdoors in open ground, the bush was 0.8 meters (2.6 ft) high. The fruits are small cherries weighing about 15 grams (0.5 oz)—red with dark green stripes, featuring a thick skin.

The variety is very productive; it set tomatoes on all the suckers I left on the plant.

Lena, how is the taste? I didn’t plant them this year, had some doubts about them. Can they be used for canning?

Sveta! The taste is just a regular tomato flavor, nothing fancy 😆 The skin is thick and the tomato is tiny, so you can’t really get a full sense of the flavor. I think you can easily use them for canning without a problem.
