De Barao Tsarsky (De Barao Royal) Tomato Review

Rate this

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): De Barao Tsarsky (Royal)

  • 🌍 Origin: A premium, upgraded offshoot of the legendary Russian “De Barao” family. The name “Tsarsky” translates to “Royal” or “Tsar’s”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate. A massive, towering vine that loves to climb. Shows excellent resistance to Leaf Mold (Cladosporium) and extreme heat, but generally requires a greenhouse to reach its full potential in cooler northern climates.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Depending on the seed source, you will either get a red, smooth plum tomato, or a pinkish-raspberry plum with a distinct “beak” (point) on the blossom end. Both strains typically weigh between 3 to 5 oz (80–150g).
  • 👅 Flavor & Texture: Dense, meaty, and very juicy for a paste tomato. The flavor is highly rated as sweet and balanced, avoiding the blandness common in many processing types.
  • 🥫 Best Uses: An elite canning tomato that holds its shape perfectly in jars. Also fantastic for fresh eating and late-season indoor storage.

Mid-season. The vines are incredibly vigorous and powerful, true indeterminates. Trusses hold 8-10 oval tomatoes with a cute little point on the end. Average weight is around 3.5 to 4 oz (100 – 120g). They are firm, gorgeous, and the absolute perfect size, texture, and shape for canning. Plus, they store really well and taste great in salads! Bulletproof against bad weather and disease. And a huge yielder! Absolute standout variety for me this year! Even though I planted late on May 4th, it still managed to set 5 full trusses.

We seem to have so many different De Baraos floating around here, probably five different versions just in one color. Early, mid-season, and late… I’ve even seen an ultra-early one. Kind of blew my mind.

I’m growing both the Ukrainian strain and the Canning Budenovka from Olya… but I have a sneaking suspicion they are the exact same tomato. Both plants are throwing out fruits where the beak is obvious and others where it isn’t, but otherwise they look identical.

Does it really matter if they look a bit different? As long as they pump out fruit and taste great!

You can always find a good fruit to save seeds from. I always inspect the vines, pick the most perfect-looking ones, and save seeds from them.

I can confidently say De Barao Royal is my best-tasting tomato this season. Yield and appearance are top tier. Holding up well against Leaf Mold so far. Planted one in the greenhouse and one outdoors this year. It absolutely hated being outside, but the greenhouse plant took off on five leaders, going strong, and was setting fruit right up until I topped it yesterday. I counted 55 small and green tomatoes hanging on it. I gave it a prime spot by the door and it’s really showing off. I’m definitely planting a bunch next year, it’s just that delicious. I was canning them in their own juice today and practically had to fight off my mother-in-law—she said it’s a crime to put tomatoes this good into jars, they should only be eaten fresh…

First time growing DB Royal, started it on two stems in the high tunnel. It wants to grow super tall, so I just let it do its thing in July and it didn’t get too crazy. Trusses hold 6-7 beautiful fruits with a tiny beak weighing up to 3.5 oz (100 grams). They blush gradually, not all at once. Flavor is a solid 4 out of 5. Going into jars with cucumbers. Haven’t tasted the canned ones yet.

Grew De-Barao Tsarsky from Angelina in the Moscow region. Absolutely loved it—great for fresh eating or canning. Started it on 2 leaders, but it could easily handle more. Trusses are packed with 5-8 fruits, no skipped blossoms, and the tomatoes look picture-perfect. Thick-walled and juicy, which is a rare combo. Started ripening with the early varieties and kept going until the bitter end. Shows good resistance to Leaf Mold. Definitely upping my plant count for 2016.

De Barao Royal Pink (Ukraine). Seeds from a Ukrainian store packet. Description: Tall indeterminate. Reaches up to 10 feet (3m), 2.8-5.3 oz (80-150g), yields up to 44 lbs (20kg) per plant. Great culinary qualities.

Grew it outdoors, mid-season, tall vine, didn’t drop a single blossom. Great all-purpose tomato, pink, no beak, incredibly sweet and flavorful. The taste held up perfectly even when ripened off the vine. Definitely growing it again, but in the greenhouse next time.

Evening everyone! I grew De Barao Royal and Orange this year. A fellow forum member, Marina, shared the seeds. Just so you know, growing tomatoes here is a nightmare—the heat, pests, and fungal issues are relentless. Well, De Barao didn’t care about the heat or anything else, didn’t drop blossoms even at 104°F (40°C), set trusses perfectly. Huge yielders. Grew them to two stems. Massive vines over 6.5 feet (2m). Didn’t get sick at all. Classic tomato flavor. Didn’t split from overwatering and hold together perfectly in jars.

Everything failed with it! Yield was terrible. I also tried to grow it out as a ‘tomato tree’ over the winter—you know, start seeds early, keep potting up, build a huge root mass, all that tedious stuff.

So I planted it on Feb 10th without grow lights. It tried its best… grew massive, obviously. Was in a 2-gallon bucket before transplanting.

Once it went in the ground it just bolted straight up. Got maybe 10 tomatoes off it, then Late Blight hit in September right when it was finally bulking up trusses.

So yeah, maybe it works if you know what you’re doing…

I

The red strain actually has those thin stems and wispy foliage. The pink one with a beak has much beefier vines, more typical for DB. I grew the red one from two different sources and they grew out identical.

Here’s my De Barao Royal. The vine is wispy but gets insanely tall. Reaches the roof of the greenhouse and then I train it horizontally. Pushes a ton of suckers up top and sets fruit right up until frost. It was a slow grower this summer, started blushing late. Probably too cold. Sweet flavor, but could use a bit more acid. Seeds from Sveta.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Propagation Note: Cloning Broken Seedlings
Notice the exchange where Lyubashka’s seedling snapped in half during transport, and Verunya told her to just root it in water?
Tomato plants are incredibly resilient and have adventitious roots along their entire stem. If you accidentally snap a tomato seedling in half (or if you just want to clone a rare variety from a sucker), never throw it away! Simply strip off the bottom set of leaves, stick the broken stem into a glass of plain water, and put it on a sunny windowsill. In 4 to 7 days, the stem will push out thick white roots. Once the roots are a couple of inches long, you can plant it directly into the garden. It will quickly catch up to the rest of your crop!
