🍅 Quick take: Dwarf Russian Swirl is a mid-season dwarf from the Dwarf Tomato Project, bred by Craig LeHoullier. It produces sweet, juicy, oblate bicolor fruits weighing roughly 3.5-8.8 oz (100-250 g), with sizes getting much larger when grown in a greenhouse. While it is a true dwarf, plants can reach 4 to 5 ft (1.2-1.5 m) tall. One grower reported getting an indeterminate potato-leaf off-type that looked identical to Dwarf Lucky Swirl. Full summary ↓

Dwarf Russian Swirl – a variety from the Dwarf Tomato Project. My bush got to about 4 ft (1.2 meters) tall. The variety turned out productive, mid-season ripening. The fruits are medium-sized, oblate, bicolor, very tasty, juicy and meaty, sweet.

My Russian Swirl also turned out quite productive. Really liked it. Grew it outdoors. Bushes were a little over 3.3 ft (1 m) tall. Tomatoes were 3.5-8.8 oz (100-250 g), very sweet.

Seeds from Kulik.

Decided to grow Russian Swirl again this year. Only had space for it in the greenhouse. The plant reached over 5 ft (1.5 m) tall. The fruits are significantly larger than they were in 2018 when grown outdoors. Productive, tasty stunner. I love it 🙂

Russian Swirl. Only had space for it in the greenhouse.

Inna, how did it perform for you timing-wise? Right alongside all the other greenhouse varieties? Did you start the seeds early with all the other dwarfs, or just like a regular indet?

Did you start the seeds early

Sveta, I sowed the dwarfs in late February this year, so a little later than I usually start dwarfs, but still earlier than my greenhouse indets.

Inna, how did it perform for you timing-wise?

The greenhouse photo is from August 13.

Indet. Potato leaf. Bicolor tomato. Good size and flavor. Oblate. In my case, it was an exact twin of Lucky Swirl. Or Lucky Captain as they also call it.

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Off-Types

  • 🌿 Plant: A fairly tall dwarf. Outdoors, it reaches 3.3-4 ft (1-1.2 m), but in a greenhouse, it can easily stretch over 5 ft (1.5 m). Usually rugose regular leaf, but tomatinka reported growing an indeterminate, potato-leaf off-type that resembled the related cross Dwarf Lucky Swirl.
  • 📈 Yield & Size: Productive. Inna noted that the fruits grown outdoors weighed 3.5-8.8 oz (100-250 g), but the ones grown in her greenhouse were significantly larger.
  • 👅 Taste: Sweet, juicy, and meaty bicolor fruits with excellent flavor.
  • 🌱 Timing: Like many dwarfs, it requires a long season. Growers start seeds in late February—earlier than their standard tall greenhouse varieties—to get ripe fruit by August.
  • 🌎 Who Reviewed It: Four growers contributed to this thread, located in USDA Zones 3 and 4.
