Quick Summary of Sadovaya Zhemchuzhina (Garden Pearl)
- 🌍 Origin: A very popular commercial variety in Russia (from the SeDek company). It is also officially registered and widely sold in Western Europe (particularly Germany) under the name Gartenperle.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate, trailing (cascading) type. It only grows to about 40-50 cm (16-20 inches) in height but spreads out very widely. It requires absolutely no pruning or suckering.
- 🪴 Growing Method: It is the ultimate “hanging basket” (ampel) tomato. If planted directly in the garden bed, it will crawl over the ground and choke out neighboring plants. Note on indoor growing: Growers report it is NOT well-suited for winter windowsill growing, as it tends to stretch out too much looking for light.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Small, beautiful, translucent pearl-pink cherry tomatoes. The largest fruits reach about 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter.
- 👅 Flavor & Yield: A very sweet and juicy cherry tomato. It is exceptionally productive, setting fruit constantly without taking breaks until the end of September.
Characteristics of the variety: Bush height up to 50 cm (20 inches), fruit size is small, fruit color is pink, ripening time is early (85-100 days), taste is sweetish, growing method is open ground, application is universal. An exceptionally decorative trailing/creeping bush, covered with translucent pink fruits. Manufacturer: SeDek.
I grew Sadovaya Zhemchuzhina (Garden Pearl) in 2011 in open ground. Seeds from SeDek. The bush was 40 cm (16 inches) tall, spreading, completely covered with small pearl-pink fruits. The largest fruit was 2.5 cm (1 inch) in diameter. Unfortunately, I couldn’t find a photo of the ripe tomatoes 😊.
This year I sowed Sadovaya Zhemchuzhina on 04.11.2016 (Nov 4th). It is growing on the windowsill. Today, 07.02.2017 (Feb 7th), it bloomed. The bush is elegant, 46 cm (18 inches) tall, and it has suckers near every leaf.
It is the tallest one I have as of today, compared to Novyy Bolshoy Gnom (New Big Dwarf), Utenok, and Zheltoya Shapochka. It is not suitable for growing on a windowsill (indoors in winter) 😊

Sadovaya Zhemchuzhina was the first trailing (hanging basket) tomato I ever planted. Actually, I planted it in a garden bed, but when I saw how it started to take over and choke out the others, I repotted it into a basket. And for good reason, now every year it goes into its own basket, I just change the soil. And what delightful little fruits it has. Pink, juicy, sweet. It won me over immediately and forever.
It is sold here, officially approved, under the name Gartenperle. A rare exception. People here love to plant tomatoes in various containers. The bush sat in open ground, didn’t get taller than 40 cm (16 inches), spread widely over the ground, fruited until the end of September, and was always covered with a crop of scarlet-red sweet cherries without a break.
We didn’t prune it, there were a moderate amount of leaves, we didn’t pick them off, so all the tomatoes were exposed to the light. Numerous blossoms, 100% fruit set. Beauty. But I don’t have a photo of the bush with the full harvest, I missed the moment, and then forgot. The seeds were from Inna from southern Germany.
