Jarson 17 (JR-17) Tomato Review & Photos

🍅 Quick take: Jarson 17 (often written as JR-17) is an indeterminate, high-yielding Polish cross that produces large, ochre/mustard-colored slicers. Growers prize it for having a complex, delicious flavor profile very similar to the famous dwarf variety Uluru Ochre, but on a tall vine. Full summary ↓

Got my seeds from Lena Danko. Here’s what she had to say about it:

Polish Jarson breeding. Grown in the dirt, vines hit about 5-5.5 ft (1.5-1.7 m). Fruits average 7-8.8 oz (200-250 g) and have this cool ochre color. Great yield and incredibly tasty.

I ran these in the greenhouse and the yield totally blew me away. Mine got way bigger than that, but honestly, the weather this season was just perfect for pumping out massive slicers.

Gotta mention the flavor separately. For years I’ve been hunting for a tall vine that matches Uluru Ochre in looks and taste. To my taste buds, this one is the closest match yet.

Just a heads up: there are some totally mixed-up seeds floating around online under the JR-17 name. 🤷‍♀️ I couldn’t track down the original source to see exactly what the Jarsons bred. But my plants (and the ones my buddy grew from the same seed batch) grew perfectly true to type, exactly like Lena described. 🎩😘

The weather didn’t do me any favors out here, but the plant still pumped out full trusses of fruit right on target weight. Seriously delicious, and an absolute dead ringer for Uluru Ochre.

Dropped seeds on March 17th.

Huge shoutout to @Olya Pskovishna for sharing! 🙏

Loved this Jarson for both yield and taste. Got my seeds from Sofia. Personally, I thought Elser Farm’s Brown Derby was a slightly closer match to Uluru than JR-17. No pics this time around.

I ran Elser Farm’s Brown Derby last year. 🤷‍♀️ Awesome tasting tomato, but to my taste buds, it wasn’t quite a perfect match for Uluru.

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage

  • 🌿 Plant: An indeterminate, tall vine reaching 5-5.5 ft (1.5-1.7 m) outdoors, and taller in a greenhouse. Growers warn that there are many off-type crosses circulating under the “JR-17” name, so finding a stable, true-to-type seed source is critical.
  • 📈 Yield: Excellent. Consistently sets full trusses of large slicers even in poor weather (as noted by a grower in Siberia). Fruits average 7-8.8 oz (200-250 g), though they can get significantly larger in greenhouse conditions.
  • 👅 Taste: Complex, rich, and highly praised. Reviewers compare it heavily to the beloved dwarf variety Uluru Ochre, making it a highly sought-after indeterminate alternative for those who love that specific ochre/mustard flavor profile.
  • 🌎 Who Reviewed It: Grown successfully across diverse climates, ranging from the short-season/cold Siberian climate of Kemerovo to the milder Baltic weather of Kaliningrad.
