Jaune du lac de Bret Tomato Review & Photos: A Golden Swiss Heirloom

Share your rating
🍅 Quick take: Jaune du lac de Bret is an indeterminate golden-yellow oxheart originally bred by a farmer near Lake Bret in Switzerland. It produces densely ribbed, conical hearts weighing 5.3-7 oz (150-200 g) and up. Growers rave about its structural beauty, sweet flavor, and lack of seeds. It’s also noted for having a remarkably firm, meaty texture that gives it a great shelf life on the counter. Interestingly, several veteran growers note it is practically identical to the Russian variety Orange Wonder of the Earth (Chudo Zemli Oranzhevoe). Full summary ↓

Info from a French source:
This variety was bred by a farmer near Lake Bret in the Vaud canton of Switzerland.
The fruit is heart-shaped and conical, weighing 5.3-7 oz (150-200 g) with a shiny golden-yellow color.
Dense flesh containing very few seeds with excellent flavor.
A productive plant throughout the entire season.

Mine grew to about 6 feet (1.8 m) tall. Productive, gorgeous, and delicious. Barely any seeds.

I second every single word. Just want to add that this was one of the most beautiful tomatoes of the season. It just feels so nice in your hand. It looks like a sculptor carved it: the ribs and folds near the stem are incredibly textured and pronounced.

Thanks @olyaka!

On top of all that, yield and flavor are fantastic. And the weight was way over 7 oz (200 g).

Agreed. A lot of the fruits weighed well over 7 oz (200 g).

For me, it was a dead ringer for Orange Wonder of the Earth (Chudo Zemli Oranzhevoe). Planted them both this year and… well. The tomato really is tasty, beautiful, and practically seedless. But makes you wonder who is trying to pull a fast one on who with these names…

I grew them in different years, but I totally agree with you 🙂 Despite the beauty and the heavy yields, I won’t be growing it again. The flesh is just too tough and firm for my liking.

Can anyone tell me if it keeps well? Even just a little bit? I’ve only got fresh eating slicers ripening right now, we can’t eat them fast enough and a lot are rotting. We don’t do any canning.

It keeps really well on the counter.

Yellow Lake Bret (Jaune Du Lac de Bret)

Both of these varieties looked incredibly similar for me too. Tasty, highly productive, sweet, and gorgeous 👍

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage

  • 🌿 Plant: Indeterminate vine, reaching around 6 ft (1.8 m). Produces golden-yellow, heart-shaped/conical fruits weighing 5.3-7 oz (150-200 g) and often much more. The fruits are visually striking, featuring deeply pronounced ribs and folds around the stem.
  • 📈 Yield: Excellent. Multiple growers called it highly productive and a standout MVP of the season.
  • 👅 Taste & Texture: Sweet flavor with very dense, meaty flesh and almost no seeds. While most loved the texture, one grower felt the dense flesh was a bit too tough/firm for their preference.
  • 📦 Storage: Exceptional for a large heirloom. Thanks to its firm structure and dense flesh, it keeps very well on the counter without spoiling quickly, making it a great choice if you get overwhelmed by the mid-summer harvest.
  • 🌎 Variety Controversy: Three experienced growers noted that Jaune du lac de Bret is visually and structurally identical to the popular Russian variety Orange Wonder of the Earth (Chudo Zemli Oranzhevoe), leading to speculation that they might be the exact same genetic line circulating under different names.
