🍅 Quick take: IPK LYC 859 El Salvador is an indeterminate, mid-season, multi-purpose red plum tomato with a distinctive pointed tip. While the flavor is described as mild or slightly bland (making it better suited for processing or canning rather than fresh eating), its main standout feature is its massive yield. Growers report that this unfussy vine will aggressively set fruit on every single leader, even if pruned to 4 or 5 stems. Full summary ↓
Growers’ Notes and Photos
Not sure which tag to use for this one. I’ll leave that to the mods.
Tall indeterminate vine, mid-season, great all-purpose variety. The fruits are small, red, elongated plums (like little icicles) with a pointed tip. Taste-wise, they are a bit on the bland side. But the yield is absolutely fantastic. However many leaders you let it run (I kept mine to 4 or 5 stems), it will set fruit heavily on every single one. Very unfussy and low-maintenance plant, I grew it in the greenhouse.
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage
- 🌿 Plant: Tall, indeterminate, mid-season vine. Produces small, elongated red plum/icicle-shaped tomatoes with a distinct pointed tip (beak). Very low-maintenance and vigorous.
- 📈 Yield: Rated as exceptionally high. The plant is incredibly generous and will aggressively set fruit on multiple leaders. The grower reported massive fruit set even when pruned to 4-5 stems in a greenhouse.
- 👅 Taste: Mild to slightly bland. It lacks the complex acidity or high sweetness of fresh-eating varieties, making it an “all-purpose” tomato that is likely much better suited for canning, sauces, or drying.
- 🌎 Who Reviewed It: Grown in the Kostroma region of Russia (USDA Zone 3) inside a greenhouse, proving it can be highly productive in short-season climates if given proper protection.
