Krayniy Sever (Far North) Tomato Review & Photos: An Ultra-Early Bush

Share your rating
🍅 Quick take: Krayniy Sever (which translates to “Far North”) is a highly compact, ultra-early tree-type dwarf originally distributed by the Russian seed company Biotekhnika. Bred specifically for extremely short and cold seasons, this rugged little bush produces round, red tomatoes weighing around 1.8-2 oz (50-60 g). It thrives outdoors or in containers and requires zero staking or pruning, making it a perfect low-maintenance choice for early harvests. Full summary ↓

A tree-type variety from Biotekhnika. The fruits are smooth, round, red, and not very large, averaging about 1.8-2 oz (50-60 g), though they can range from 1 to 3.5 oz (30 to 100 g). The taste is your standard tomato flavor with a bit of a tang.

It is ultra-early. Even in a cold and rainy summer, the first red tomatoes show up by early August. Over the years, I haven’t found a single earlier variety or hybrid for outdoor growing. (Yamal starts ripening just a little bit later). It’s been in the State Register since 2007.

Two years ago I grew it in a bucket inside the greenhouse. It felt absolutely fantastic in there.

Krayniy Sever pushed out its first flower buds about a month after germination.
Sowed the seeds on March 5th.
Hoping for an early harvest!

First fruit set happened on April 28th.
That’s 48 days after germination! 👍

A tomato is starting to ripen on Krayniy Sever! That makes it exactly 3 months from germination! 👏

My husband likes these bushes the most, he told me: “We need to plant more of these ones, the plants themselves are tiny but they already have tomatoes on them.” 😀 (Or maybe he just likes them because you don’t have to tie them to a stake :-X ;D). Next year I’ll definitely put in way more plants for an early harvest, not just 2 bushes.

Svetochka (Drosera), thank you for the seeds!!!

Mine started turning red too. Sowed the seeds in late April, moved it out to the greenhouse in June.

Moncha, mine didn’t have ribbing like that on them…

Other than that, they are very sweet, as long as you let them fully ripen to a deep red color!

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage

  • 🌿 Plant: A highly compact, tree-type dwarf bush. It requires zero pruning and does not need to be staked, making it an incredibly low-maintenance variety. Because of its sturdy but small stature, it thrives outdoors in the dirt or when grown in buckets/containers inside a greenhouse.
  • 🍅 Fruit: Small, round, red tomatoes averaging around 1.8-2 oz (50-60 g).
  • 📈 Yield: Its main selling point is extreme earliness. Growers report first fruit set at just 48 days from germination, and fully ripe tomatoes at exactly 3 months. It is bred specifically for cold climates and will set fruit reliably even during cold, rainy, and miserable summers.
  • 👅 Taste: A classic, old-fashioned tomato flavor with a bit of tang. However, if left on the bush until fully deep red, it develops a surprisingly sweet profile.
