Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zones 4-5 Experience)
The description says: vine up to 5 feet (1.5 m), fruits are dark pink, oblate, up to 14 oz (400 g), meaty and sugary flesh, very delicious, early and productive variety. Seeds from V. Monakhova.
It really is a very productive variety, with a delicious real tomato flavor, sweet, and not bland at all. Except for me it wasn’t early, I’d definitely classify it as a mid-season variety, and the vine grew to almost 6.5 feet (2 m). Definitely putting this on next year’s grow list.
VNIISSOK probably used this as a base very recently to breed the “Korneevsky” variety, and it’s already in the State Register. They improved it using analytical selection methods, which included breeding out the fasciation, which you can actually see in the photo above in this thread.
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage
- 🌿 Plant: A vigorous indeterminate vine. While some older descriptions list it as a shorter 5-foot (1.5 m) plant, greenhouse growers report it easily reaching 6.5 feet (2 m) tall.
- 🍅 Fruit: Large, dark pink beefsteaks with an oblate (flat-round) shape. They average up to 14 oz (400 g). The original heirloom line is prone to “megablooms” which can cause misshapen or boat-like fruits.
- 📈 Yield: Rated as a heavy producer. Despite some catalogs claiming it is early, forum members agree it is a true mid-season producer.
- 👅 Taste: Universally praised for classic heirloom flavor. It is intensely sweet, never bland, and features a dense, tender, sugary flesh that is highly sought after for fresh eating and slicing.
