Coeur Fondant Tomato Review

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Coeur Fondant

  • 🌍 Origin: A fantastic heirloom variety originating from France. The name translates beautifully to “Fondant Heart” or “Melting Heart”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall). An extremely vigorous vine that can easily shoot up to 2–2.5 meters (6.5–8 ft). Grower Note: It may display physiological leaf roll early in the season or during temperature swings, but it usually bounces back aggressively mid-season. Produces until the first frost.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Red, elongated plum or “icicle” shaped tomatoes weighing up to 200g (7 oz).
  • 👅 Flavor: Exceptional! Unlike many paste tomatoes that are dry and only good for processing, Coeur Fondant features a dense, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth flesh. Very sweet and aromatic.
  • ⏳ Grower Notes: A true dual-purpose tomato. It yields heavily, tastes amazing fresh, and stores exceptionally well on the counter without spoiling or losing its flavor.

It’s very strange I didn’t find this variety in the catalog yet. Even though many have grown it and praised it.

I got my seeds from Angelina. Description: Mid-season, indeterminate variety with a long fruiting period until frost. Bush height around 2 meters (6.5 ft). Healthy plants produce a huge crop of tasty, meaty, low-seed fruits.

At first, this variety disappointed me. It started showing severe leaf roll, set just a couple of fruits at the bottom, and then just stalled. I was upset, of course. But suddenly, in the middle of the season, it bounced back, rapidly grew its stem, and loaded up a decent amount of very cute “icicles” (elongated plums). And wow, were they sweet!!! Simply a miracle! And you know what kind of summer we had. I think in normal weather, this would be a super-productive plant.

Fondant Heart (Coeur Fondant, France). An excellent variety, my find of the season! 😄 Indeterminate, grew in the greenhouse in 2 stems. Productive, long fruiting period. The fruits are cute red elongated plums weighing up to 200g (7 oz). They are firm but not dry, very tasty and sweet.

I also want to praise Fondant Heart. For several years I planted various pepper-shaped varieties, and they all just ended up being used only for canning. I don’t even know why I was tempted to plant Fondant Heart. This tomato turned out to be amazing in taste! Firm, buttery, melt-in-your-mouth flesh. Sweet! Aromatic. And it’s very productive and produces all season long. It stores incredibly well, doesn’t spoil, and doesn’t lose its flavor.
