Quick Summary of Uboynaya Sila (Lethal Force)
- 🌍 Origin: A commercial Russian variety bred by the famous “Siberian Garden” (Sibsad) agricultural company. The name translates to “Lethal Force” or “Deadly Power”.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Determinate (bush). It forms a small, compact, slightly sprawling plant that requires minimal fuss. Excellent for open ground and container growing. It has a concentrated harvest, meaning the plant tends to die back (fade) once it finishes giving its main crop.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Classic round red tomatoes. Despite the commercial seed packet claiming they are “meaty,” real growers note they are actually very juicy with plenty of seeds.
- 👅 Flavor: The true standout feature of this variety. It has an exceptional sweet-and-sour profile with a refreshing tanginess. In sunny years, growers report an “explosion of taste” where the sweetness goes completely off the charts.
- ⏳ Maturity & Yield: Early season. While it may not reach the highly optimistic 5 kg (11 lbs) per bush claimed by the manufacturer, it ripens its entire crop very quickly and reliably, making it one of the first fresh garden tomatoes on the table.
A variety from Sibsad (Siberian Garden). Unfussy, a small bush, spread out a little bit. It didn’t show the promised yield of 5 kg (11 lbs) this year, and I think it never will. The tomatoes weren’t meaty as stated on the packaging; on the contrary, they have a lot of seeds (see photo).
What made me happy about this variety was its early ripening, the fast delivery of the entire harvest, full ripening of the fruits, and a sweet-sour taste. There is more tanginess than in most varieties, which I really liked. I think the seeds are exactly what gives it this tartness. As it was one of the very first to ripen, we ate everything straight off the bush. We showed all our arriving visitors where the bush was planted once, and a path was quickly trodden right to it.
And here is the bush from 2015. At the moment, it has given almost its entire harvest and has begun to fade. The taste in 2014 was a 5 out of 5. This year, with good sunny weather, it pleased us with an explosion of taste – 5.5 out of 5! The tartness remained the same, but the sweetness just went off the charts, that’s the rating from the whole family.
