Zoloto Maharadzhi (Maharaja’s Gold) Tomato Review

📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Zoloto Maharadzhi (Maharaja’s Gold)

  • 🌍 Origin: A collectible Eastern European heirloom variety. The name translates to “Maharaja’s Gold.” It is widely circulated by prominent Russian seed collectors like Valery Redko and the Brizhan family.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), though its height varies wildly depending on the environment. In a greenhouse, it’s a vigorous monster pushing past 6 feet (1.8 m). Outdoors in open ground, it behaves more like a compact semi-determinate, staying around 3.3 feet (1 m).
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Large, beautiful, bright yellow beefsteaks with slight ribbing at the shoulders. The plants are absolute workhorses, loading up heavily with fruit.
  • 👅 Flavor: The main point of contention. Unlike most yellow heirlooms which are famously sweet and mild, this variety is distinctly tart, tangy, and even sour.

This was my first time growing this variety. I bought the seeds from V. Redko. I grew two plants in the hoop house. It’s definitely an indeterminate, grew over 6 feet (1.8 m) tall, very vigorous. I was pleasantly surprised by the heavy yield and how beautiful the fruit looked.

The flavor let me down a bit, though. Or maybe it just seemed way more acidic because I was comparing it to the other yellow varieties I grew this year.

My Maharaja’s Gold seeds were from Brizhan.

I grew mine outdoors in the dirt, and the plant stayed around 3.3 feet (1 m) tall. It really was a super heavy yielder, but the tomatoes were sour. Couldn’t find my photos of it 🙁

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: The Tart Yellow Tomato Paradox
Both growers in this thread note that Maharaja’s Gold is acidic or even sour. In the tomato world, this is actually quite unusual! Most yellow and orange heirlooms (think Kellogg’s Breakfast, Dr. Wyche’s, or Lemon Boy) are famous for their sweet, fruity, low-acid flavor profiles. Growers naturally expect a yellow tomato to taste mild and sweet. When you bite into a yellow tomato and get hit with that sharp, old-fashioned “red tomato bite,” it can be very jarring! However, for folks who are allergic to the red pigment in tomatoes but still crave that classic acidic tang on their BLT, a tart yellow variety like this is actually a fantastic find.
