📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Zheltyi Shar (Yellow Globe)

  • 🌍 Origin: A commercial variety. The name translates exactly to “Yellow Globe”.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), easily exceeding 6.5 ft (2 m). Performs great outdoors (requires heavy staking) and in greenhouses.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Bright yellow, perfectly round globes weighing around 5.3 oz (150 g).
  • 👅 Uses & Storage: An excellent multi-purpose tomato. Great for fresh eating, but it truly shines in canning and pickling. Standout feature: It has an incredibly long post-harvest shelf life and ripens flawlessly off the vine.

Description from the seed packet: A mid-early (106-110 days from seedling emergence to fruiting) tall (over 6.5 ft / 200 cm) variety, recommended for open ground (with stakes) and high tunnels. Prune to a single stem, removing all suckers. The fruits are perfectly round, bright yellow in color, weighing 5.3 oz (150 g). Perfect for pickling, marinating, canning, and making fresh salads. I’ll add that Yellow Globe fruits store incredibly well post-harvest. For me, this variety showed average yields and average disease resistance.

In the 2016 season, Yellow Globe showed excellent yields again.

I’ve grown this variety for several years now. A worthy, productive, and tasty tomato. In the autumn (around October), some of the late fruits developed a bitter taste. It produces right up until the frosts in the greenhouse. They store exceptionally well and ripen flawlessly off the vine.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Notes:

  • Late Season Bitterness: Natalya notes that the last tomatoes picked in October had a bitter taste. This is a common phenomenon with many late-season harvests. When night temperatures drop drastically in autumn, the cold stress disrupts the plant’s ability to convert starches into sugars. This often results in late-season fruits tasting bland, mealy, or even slightly bitter compared to the exact same tomatoes harvested during the warm summer months!
