I got mine about three years ago from Tomochka @Drakonka, huge THANKS to her for that!!!
Excellent tomato!!! Thank you @Lyudmila D. for the seeds!!! Heavy yielder, meaty, tasty to me. Can’t forgive myself for somehow failing to save any seeds… Hoping to have some next year. Ladies, if you have it, plant it, you won’t regret it!
Growth Habits & Yield
Received Matrena from @galka68 🙏 Soooooooo productive, beautiful and tasty little tomato
I only found it in Ukraine in Shevchuk’s private collection.

His description lists the height at 2.6 ft (0.8 m). Surprised, because mine in the poly greenhouse was much taller – around 6 ft (1.8 m). I agree it’s a very productive and tasty tomato. My seeds were from @Lyudmila D. Lyudochka, thanks for a great variety.

Maybe it stays shorter outdoors. But in the greenhouse mine went right to the roof. And I ran it to 3 or 4 stems — spread it out in different directions like a spider and was just amazed how it kept setting fruit non-stop. And my thanks go to Galina @galka68
Our Galunya @galka68 is a temptress… finds these varieties that make us lose our heads, and hunting them down becomes our life’s mission…. 😭
I didn’t do it on purpose, just sent out whatever grew. They really love it in Poland too.
Comparison to Puzata Khata
Ladies, how is this variety any different from, say, Puzata Khata or similar ones? It’s red, right? And tall. Now, if it actually stayed at 2.6 ft (0.8 m), then sure!

Hello everyone!
Ninulya, it doesn’t look like it’s any different from Puzata Khata at all… At least by fruit shape, color, and the plant structure itself. The height of the vines in the greenhouse was around 6-6.5 ft (1.8-2.0 m), strong thick stems, healthy dark foliage practically to the end of the season. Fruits have that same pear shape, chubby, averaging 7-8.8 oz (200-250 g) (some were bigger). They are meaty, dense, thick flesh with very good flavor. Very insignificant amount of seeds in the fruits.
Yield-wise Matrena turned out to be very generous, fruited until the end of September until I finally pulled the plants down.
I grew Puzata Khata 3 years ago, I want to repeat it alongside Matrena next summer… My Matrena seeds came from Ukraine.
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste, and Comparisons
- 🌿 Plant: A vigorous, mid-early indeterminate vine with strong, thick stems and dark healthy foliage. Despite some commercial descriptions listing it as short, growers confirm it routinely hits 6-6.5 ft (1.8-2.0 m) in a greenhouse. Fruits are chubby, ribbed red pears averaging 7-10.5 oz (200-300 g). Highly resistant to blossom end rot (BER).
- 📈 Yield: Exceptionally high. Growers note it produces “generously” and sets fruit non-stop all season long, even performing reliably through poor weather conditions. Can be aggressively pruned to 3-4 stems in a greenhouse with great results.
- 👅 Taste: Dense, meaty flesh with very few seeds. The flavor is consistently rated as rich, sweet, and very good.
- 🔍 Comparison: Multiple growers noted that Matrena is practically identical to Puzata Khata in plant structure, fruit shape, color, and taste.
- 🌎 Who Reviewed It: 11 growers participated in this thread, heavily clustered across USDA Zones 3 and 4 in Russia and Belarus.
