Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zone 4 Experience)
MIDNIGHT TIGER
Gorgeous variety bred by J&L Gardens in the US. Still not completely stable yet, so off-types and color variations are definitely possible.
Fruits are round, running 5.3-7 oz (150-200 g), olive-green base striped up in yellow, copper, and orange tones with dark blue antho shoulders. The meat is juicy and sweet, very pleasant dessert profile with just a subtle bite of acid right under the skin. Packs an interesting, aromatic aftertaste that stands out from most typical blue tomatoes.
Regular leaf indeterminate vine with moderate, manageable vigor. Outstanding resilience against disease pressure and shrugs off wild temperature swings without skipping a beat.
Full Summary: Plant Habit, Hardiness, and Flavor Profile
- 🌿 Plant: Regular leaf indeterminate with medium-height growth habit. Very manageable vine structure that does not run out of control. Yields round, 5.3-7 oz (150-200 g) fruits sporting multi-colored green, copper, and orange stripes capped by dark indigo antho caps.
- 📈 Hardiness: Exceptional resistance against standard foliage diseases and unpredictable temperature swings between day and night.
- 👅 Taste: Juicy, rich, and distinctly sweet with an aromatic complexity not often found in early anthocyanin lines. A slight edge of skin tartness balances the sugary gel.
- 🧬 Genetic Stability: Developed by J&L Gardens; lines are still stabilizing in hobbyist circulation, meaning slight differences in shape, stripe intensity, or base hues can emerge between plants.
- 🌎 Who Reviewed It: Grown in USDA Zone 4 (Ryazan Region), demonstrating reliable setting and ripening in continental, short-season conditions.
J&L Gardens (New Mexico, USA) is renowned in the heirloom community for pioneering experimental crosses involving wild tomato species, unusual striped patterns, and anthocyanin genetics. Because many of their creative lines are shared with hobbyists in early or mid-filial generations (F4-F7), minor variations in interior coloration (ranging from chartreuse-green to deep amber) or shoulder darkness are normal. Saving seeds from the best-tasting, true-to-type fruit is recommended to lock in traits for your specific microclimate.
