Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zones 6-11 Experience)
Minusinsk Mango
The first photos are from a friend who sent me the seeds.
It’s a mid-season indeterminate family heirloom out of the city of Minusinsk. The vine gets up to about 6 to 6.5 feet (1.8-2 m) tall, but it’s really well-behaved. Regular leaf, with slightly drooping foliage.
The fruits are oblate, pale yellow with pink rays radiating from the blossom end. They have this superb honey-like flavor. Juicy, sweet, basically tastes like a real exotic fruit, weighing anywhere from 7 to 16 oz (200-450 g). The flesh is buttery and tender, and there are hardly any seeds.
This tomato is highly valued for its heavy yields and top-tier taste. Minusinsk Mango makes incredibly tasty juices, purees, and paste. The skin is a bit too thin for whole canning or pickling, but it is absolutely stellar for making salads.
The last pics show how this variety did for me in my poly greenhouse. Delicious, heavy yielding, and just gorgeous (especially when you slice into it). It kept setting fruit right up until the fall. I mostly used them for salads. My original seeds came from Estonia.
Full Summary: Plant Habit, Yield, and Culinary Use
- 🌿 Plant: Indeterminate, mid-season. Reaches 6-6.5 ft (1.8-2 m) in a greenhouse. Despite its height, growers note that the vine is manageable and not overly aggressive, featuring the slightly drooping/wispy foliage characteristic of many Russian heirlooms.
- 🍅 Fruit: Large, oblate bicolors. The skin is a pale yellow/gold, heavily blushed with pink rays that start from the blossom end and spread upward. Average weight is between 7 and 16 oz (200-450 g). The internal flesh is meaty, buttery, and has very few seed locules.
- 📈 Yield: Exceptional. Both reviewers noted it as one of their heaviest producers of the season, maintaining steady fruit set well into the fall months.
- 👅 Taste & Use: Highly praised for a sweet, honey-like flavor with tropical fruit undertones. Due to its very thin skin, it is not recommended for whole canning or pickling. Instead, it shines as a fresh eating tomato, perfect for salads, slicing, or processing into sweet yellow tomato juice and purees.
