Natalina Tomato Review: Giant Red Italian Beefsteak

Share your rating
🍅 Quick take: Natalina is a tall, vigorous indeterminate Italian heirloom that produces massive red beefsteaks weighing up to 1-1.5 lbs (500-700 g). Growers rave about its outstanding flavor, meaty texture, and beautiful, smooth appearance (it doesn’t produce gnarly, catfaced fruits). Despite their large size, the fruits are firm and possess excellent keeping qualities, with some holding up in storage all the way into November. Full summary ↓

Natalina.

Indet, a wonderful Italian variety, one of the best red tomatoes of the season 👍

Great yield, and the tomatoes themselves are extremely high quality. They are red, meaty beefsteaks with very few seeds. Beautiful and perfectly uniform—absolutely no gnarly or catfaced fruits. Firm, but with outstanding flavor 😋

Weights up to 1.1 lbs (500 g), sets beautiful trusses, and the last picked fruits actually held up in storage until November. Grew it in the greenhouse pruned to 2 stems.

This was also one of the best tasting varieties of the season for me. Every single tomato on the truss was huge.

Was the skin on yours delicate? I had a seed mix-up—I planted what I thought was a cherry, but ended up with big fruits like this on a pretty short plant. They are very delicate, though. Tasty.

The skin is standard. The tomatoes are firm, meaty, ranging from medium up to extra-large (1.3-1.5 lbs / 600-700 g). The plant is an indet, tall and highly vigorous, with good yields. Once fully ripe, the taste is wonderful 😋

Thanks. What on earth did I actually end up growing then? 😂

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage

  • 🌿 Plant: A highly vigorous, tall indeterminate vine that responds well to being pruned to 2 stems. (Note: if your plant is short and stubby like Galiy’s, you likely have a seed mix-up).
  • 📈 Yield: Excellent producer. Sets large, heavy trusses with consistently huge fruits from top to bottom.
  • 👅 Taste: Universally praised as having an outstanding, rich flavor, earning it a spot as one of the best red tomatoes of the season for multiple growers.
  • 📦 Texture/Storage: The fruits are massive red beefsteaks, easily reaching 1-1.5 lbs (500-700 g). Despite their size, they are remarkably smooth and uniform without the ugly catfacing common to giant heirlooms. They are very meaty with few seeds, firm-fleshed, and have an impressive shelf life, capable of storing late into the fall.
