👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: Tad Smith’s Breeding & The “Pale” Name
Pale Perfect Purple was bred by horticulturist Tad Smith of Somerset, New Jersey. Seeking an earlier, smoother dark tomato with disease resistance, Smith crossed the famous disease-tolerant pink slicer Ozark Pink with the rich heirloom beefsteak Purple Price. The resulting stabilized potato-leaf selection was dubbed “Pale Perfect Purple” because its clear epidermal skin produces a lighter, luminous dusty-rose shade compared to dark yellow-skinned “black” tomatoes like Cherokee Purple.
