🍅 Quick take: Pastel Sleeves is an eye-catching indeterminate elongated paste variety bred by American breeder Tom Wagner. The 3-4.5 oz (80-130 g) cylindrical to pear-shaped fruits display shimmering, semi-translucent cream skin with a gentle pink blush and lime-green seed gel. Prized for its sweet fruity walls and suitability for dehydrating, growers report a stark divide: some harvest solid, meaty fruits, while others in extreme heat experience hollow, stuffer-like seed cavities.
Growers’ Notes and Field Trials (USDA Zone 4 Experience)
Mid-to-late season bicolor. Grew it out in the open garden where the vine topped out around 4 ft (1.2 m). Fruits are elongated plum-shaped pastes in a delicate cream color flushed with a pink blush. The flesh inside is yellow-green marbled with pink veins. The fruits are tender with an iridescent, almost translucent skin. Flavor evolved over the course of the summer from pretty ordinary early on to outstanding and sweet by peak harvest. Seeds originated from Ruslan Dukhov.
My seeds came from Valery Popenko. Grew two vines outdoors in the ground, and both stayed fairly compact at 3.3-4 ft (1-1.2 m). Ripened mid-to-late season with respectable yields.Really loved the fruit shape, gorgeous little elongated pears that honestly look like sleeves, with a few fruits coming out slightly flattened. Color pattern is gorgeous: a mix of green, orange, and soft pink. Fruit weight ran 3-4.5 oz (80-130 g).
Flavor was great and stayed consistent all season. The earliest ripe fruits were a bit hollow inside, but the thick outer walls were sweet with a distinct fruity note. From the second cluster on, the hollow cavities disappeared. Dried a batch in the dehydrator and they turned out unbelievably delicious.
Really pleased with this variety. Ran it in the greenhouse. Came out gorgeous and the flavor did not disappoint either. Excellent yield, set every single cluster without dropping a blossom.Trained the vine to a single leader and it stretched well over 6.5 ft (2 m). In my garden, the fruits were more cylindrical than pear-shaped. Firm, dense skin and thick, meaty walls.
The Hollow vs. Solid Meat Debate: Heat, Puffiness, and Seed Sources
Kept a narrow, tidy canopy, which matters a lot in my setup. Heavy producer, gorgeous, and set every single cluster. In summer 2016 we had scorching heat and many varieties dropped their second and third trusses, but Sleeves stood there covered in tomatoes. The big drawback: I don’t know why, but every tomato turned out hollow. Totally surprised me since I had never grown a tomato with empty seed pockets before. Planting it again this season to see what happens, since folks in this thread are pulling solid fruit. Maybe I will have better luck this round.
Mine were hollow too! Seed came from Popenko. Seriously, Popenko and Dukhov need to compare notes, because they are clearly distributing two completely different tomatoes!Productive, sure. Flavor was so-so, though very juicy. The small bit of interior pulp around the seeds was green. Unquestionably gorgeous fruit, but this year it dragged its feet and took forever to finish ripening before the season ended.
Same story here, had Popenko seeds and wound up with hollow, puffy fruit. Did not like it at all.
Full Summary: Plant Habit, Puffiness, Flavor, and Sun-Drying
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate vine with a polite, non-sprawling canopy. Stays compact at 3.3-4 ft (1-1.2 m) in open ground, but reaches over 6.5 ft (2 m) trained to a single leader under greenhouse glass.
- 🍅 Fruit Appearance: Elongated, cylindrical to fluted pear-shaped paste (“sleeves”), weighing 3-4.5 oz (80-130 g). Translucent, iridescent pastel cream skin with a faint pink wash and lime-green seed locules.
- 📈 Yield & Heat Setting: Mid-to-late season. Outstanding blossom retention during severe heatwaves; rarely drops a cluster even when neighboring varieties abort blooms.
- 🕳️ The Hollow Fruit Phenotype: Several growers using specific seed distributions (primarily Popenko) noted marked puffiness with empty seed locules, characteristic of hollow stuffer tomatoes. Other growers reported dense, completely solid fruit walls. This is influenced by both heat stress during pollination and minor genetic drift.
- 👅 Flavor & Preservation: Sweet, mild, and fruity outer pericarp walls. Because of its thick walls and lower water content in the locules, it is widely acclaimed as an exceptional variety for the dehydrator and sun-drying.
- 🌎 Reviewers: Tested across multiple cold-season microclimates in USDA Zone 4 (Moscow Region, Kostroma, Tatarstan, Kaluga).
