Peppermint Tomato Review & Photos: Bicolor Heirloom

Rate this

The TL;DR: Peppermint is a stunning mid-season bicolor heirloom (yellow/orange with red marbling and stripes). Vines are generally Indeterminate to semi-determinate; well-behaved and sparse on suckers, reaching 5-7.5 ft (1.5-2.3m) depending on greenhouse or outdoor conditions. Yields are typically average, but the fruits are massive (14-24 oz) and visually gorgeous. The flavor profile is deeply sweet, fruity, and occasionally described as “honey-like,” especially if allowed to ripen a few days on the counter. Despite the name, it does not taste like mint.

Peppermint. Seeds were from Popenko. Semi-indet (in the greenhouse it hit about 5.2 ft / 1.60m). The plant isn’t sprawling, hardly threw any suckers at all. Fruits are oblate, yellow-orange with red stripes. Very tasty, aromatic 😋 Mid-season variety, average yield, but for such beauty, I would definitely plant it again 👍👍👍👍👍👍

Zulfiya: Are the tomatoes on this variety crunchy like apples?

No, Zulya 😳 If you let this variety rest on the counter for a bit, it becomes fantastically delicious, but there is absolutely no crunch 😆😆😆😆😆😆

Mila, I had about 10 fruits on the plant, but they were all massive, around 14-18 oz (400-500g). The fruits are tasty, pure meat, and definitely not crunchy. A very delicious tomato.

Elena, for me, this is a variety you plant just for the sheer joy of it—it’s just so beautiful and tasty. 👍😋 I easily forgive it for the average yield 😳

Mila, I also really loved Dixie Golden Giant for its taste, yield, and beauty!

Seeds from Kulik. I grew one plant on the 4th row from the sun, pruned to 2 leaders. Yield was average, fruits were large. The flavor was quite plain and one-dimensionally sweet all season long. It’s possible it just didn’t get enough sun. I’ll try it outdoors in the dirt next year.

Valery, oddly enough, the flavor completely changes after the fruit sits on the counter for a while. It gets super aromatic and develops this rich, dense, honey-like jammy texture 😋😋😋😋😋

I really loved this variety. Grew 2 plants in the greenhouse. The vines aren’t super dense, but they grew very tall. My husband had to tie up the top branches—we estimated they shot up to about 7.5 ft (2.30m). Very productive. During a massive heatwave (over 104°F / 40°C) it skipped a couple of clusters, but then made up for it by setting a ton of fruit all at once.

Very delicious and aromatic, sweet and beautiful! The fruits are large and extra-large (for the most part). Everyone who tried it loved it. In the slice photo, it’s a bit overripe. Seeds were from Kulik.

I really loved my Peppermints 👍 They were productive, the flavor shifted a bit as they ripened, but they were never bland. Huge thanks to Lyuba from Transnistria for the seeds! 🙏🙏🙏

I’ll post my Peppermints too 🙂 In the greenhouse, they reached 5-6 ft (1.5-1.8m). Mid-season ripening. The fruits were very tasty, meaty, and sweet. Turned out to be a good yield.

Excellent taste! There were absolutely no seeds in the first fruit. Yield was average in my greenhouse.

Why is it called Peppermint? Is there something minty about the tomato? 🤷

I’m not the most refined taste-tester, but there really is something special in the flavor, at least to me. I’m currently tasting everything that ripened to decide which ones to save seeds from. The absolute best ones. I’m keeping this one.

My Peppermint. I liked it 🙂 Tasty, quite productive, and produces reasonably large fruits. But there is absolutely nothing minty in the flavor 😆

I planted 1 vine in the greenhouse in 2019. Harvested a total of 4.7 lbs (2130g) from it. All the tomatoes were incredibly beautiful, ranging from 7 to 24 oz (200 to 700g). Mine were probably underripe though; they were a bit hard when I tried them. Will definitely plant it again in 2020.

What is its days to maturity (DTM) / ripening time?

Mine cracked heavily. Deep, vertical cracks down the sides. Because of that, I ended up dropping this variety.

Here are my Peppermints in 2020. Once they finish ripening on the counter, I’ll make a video showing the slice and doing a tasting.

Poltava (Zone 5b)

Poltava. Grown outdoors in the dirt. The plant was vigorous right from the seedling stage.

Average yield. Medium-to-large fruits. The flavor is very sweet, fruity, almost berry-like. It’s not just a one-dimensional sweetness either; it has a slight tang to it that makes it rich.

Definitely planning to repeat this one.

Variety Summary: Peppermint

  • Plant Habit: Indeterminate to semi-determinate, reaching 5-6 ft (1.5-1.8m) on average, up to 7.5 ft (2.3m) in hot greenhouses. Plants are “well-behaved” and sparsely foliated, throwing very few suckers.
  • Yield: Generally average. While it won’t set records for volume, the sheer size of individual fruits compensates for the lower fruit count per cluster. Can drop blossoms in extreme heat (above 100°F).
  • Fruit Profile: Large bicolor beefsteaks (yellow/orange skin with red marbling and stripes). Weights range from 14-24 oz (400-700g).
  • Flavor: Complex, sweet, and fruity. Needs a few days of counter ripening to achieve a smooth, dense, “honey-like” jammy texture. Has a mild tang that adds depth. (Note: It does not taste like mint.)
