Grower’s Field Notes and Photos (USDA Zone 4 Experience)
Indeterminate, tall-growing, mid-season variety with fine, wispy foliage.Fruits are medium-sized red plums, frequently developing distinct fluting and ribs along the sides. They are dense, meaty, and juicy, with tiny seed cavities and very few seeds per fruit.
Flavor is very good with plenty of natural sugar. For my personal taste, though, it could have used a bit more tart acidity to balance everything out. Because of that, during certain spells in mid-summer, the fruit tasted a bit flat-sweet.
Yield was very strong, loading up heavy, packed clusters. Grew this outside in the garden bed where the vine reached 5.5 ft (1.7 m) tall. Seeds came from Tatiana Kouchnareva.
Full Summary: Plant Habit, Fruit Density, Flavor, and Processing
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Vigorous, tall indeterminate vine reaching 5.5 ft (1.7 m) out in the garden. Bears characteristic slender, drooping “wispy” foliage typical of old Mediterranean paste heirlooms.
- 🍅 Fruit Anatomy: Medium red elongated plums/pears (~3-6 oz / 85-170 g), often displaying longitudinal fluting or pronounced shoulder ribs. Cross-sections reveal exceptionally thick pericarp walls, minimal seed gel, and small seed locules.
- 👅 Flavor Profile: Dominated by mild sweetness with very low titratable acidity. While some fresh-market eaters find the profile “flat-sweet” in raw salads, this high-sugar, low-acid balance is ideal for sweet marinara sauces and canning puree.
- 📈 Yield: High. Forms abundant, heavy trusses that hang securely on the vine without premature dropping.
- 🥫 Kitchen Applications: Built specifically for the sauce kettle and dehydrator. The solid flesh simmers down quickly without throwing off gallons of watery runoff.
- 🌎 Trial Conditions: Grown completely outdoors without high tunnel protection in Kostroma, Russia (USDA Zone 4).
