🍅 Quick take: Red General (Krasnyi General) is a heavy-yielding indeterminate variety that produces large, glossy red tomatoes weighing up to 14 oz (400 g). Known among growers as an absolute workhorse, it boasts a classic, rich tomato flavor. While some seed lines produce oblate (flat-round) beefsteaks, other strains throw large, blunt oxhearts on taller, more vigorous vines. Full summary ↓
Growers’ Notes and Photos (USDA Zones 4-6 Experience)
A really great workhorse variety, very productive. It’s a fairly short indet, grew it in the greenhouse pruned to two leaders. The fruits are glossy red oblate slicers with a good classic flavor, getting up to 14 oz (400 g). Seeds from V. Redko. I planted it right next to Brave General (the pink one).
Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage
- 🌿 Plant: Indeterminate vine. There seem to be two distinct strains in circulation: one is a relatively short, manageable vine, while the other is highly vigorous and easily reaches 6.5 ft (2 m) inside a greenhouse. Both respond well to being pruned to two main leaders.

- 📈 Yield: Extremely high. Growers universally agree that this variety is an absolute workhorse, reliably pumping out heavy harvests.
- 👅 Taste: A great, classic, old-fashioned tomato flavor that is perfect for slicing and fresh eating.
