Roșii de Prahova (Tomatoes of Prahova).

An heirloom landrace hailing from the Gornet area of Prahova County in east-central Romania.

Tall indeterminate vine reaching around 6 ft (1.8 m), very heavy producer, mid-season maturity. Sturdy plant with regular foliage.

The fruits are gorgeous blunt oxhearts in a rich raspberry-rose color, running 10.5 to 14 oz (300-400 g), and highly aromatic. The texture is tender, buttery, and melt-in-your-mouth, yet dense and sliceable, delivering that wonderful, rich flavor of old-fashioned traditional heirlooms. Skin is tender and thin.

I grew Roșii de Prahova in a polycarb greenhouse and fell in love from the very first bite. Even though it is officially listed as mid-season, it was among the earliest to ripen in my setup. Set fruit without skipping a single cluster, cranking out high yields across an extended harvest window. Breathtakingly beautiful, remarkably delicious fruit averaging 12.3 to 14 oz (350-400 g). An absolute top favorite! Felt like a crime to chop them into a salad, so we just made tomato sandwiches or ate thick slices fresh with a sprinkle of salt.

👨‍🌾 Editor’s Note: The Prahova Landrace Heritage
Prahova County, situated in the historic Muntenia region of Romania, is world-famous for its Dealu Mare wine region and fertile agricultural river valleys. Roșii de Prahova is an authentic Romanian local heirloom (“roșii” simply being Romanian for “tomatoes”). While many large pink oxhearts are notorious for having wispy, droopy foliage that suffers in summer heat, growers report that this Romanian strain develops a robust, thick-stemmed canopy that powers continuous, uninterrupted fruit set from bottom to top. Its delicate skin and buttery, low-gel interior make it a premier table slicer best enjoyed fresh off the vine.
