📌 Quick Summary: Tante Gretels Magische Hüte – Aunt Gretel’s Magic Hats

  • 🌍 Origin: A stunning heirloom variety with a German name, translating to “Aunt Gretel’s Magic Hats.”
  • 🌱 Plant Habit: A tall, indeterminate vine that requires staking. It is a very reliable producer with a long fruiting window. It sets fruit exceptionally well, even in partially shaded areas of the greenhouse.
  • 🍅 Fruit & Yield: Produces gorgeous, deeply ribbed oxheart-shaped tomatoes with pronounced, elongated pointy tips. They typically weigh between 3.5 to 9 oz (100-250g).
  • 🎨 Color & Flavor: A mesmerizing bi-color tomato (yellow/orange with pink/red marbling inside and out). The flesh is very meaty, dense, and “sweet as candy,” with very few seeds.
  • 💡 Good to Know: There is also a solid red segregation/strain of this variety known as Tante Gretels Rote Hüte (Aunt Gretel’s Red Hats).

Tante Gretels Magische Hüte (Aunt Gretel’s Magic Hats)

One of the absolute best varieties of the season! Forever love! 😘

It’s an indeterminate, incredibly high-yielding plant that fruits for a very long time. It sets fruit beautifully even when heavily shaded, and the harvested tomatoes store quite well. The fruits are shaped like charming bi-color hearts, most of them with sharp, pointy tips. They weigh 3.5-7 oz (100-200g). Very meaty, extremely delicious, and have a very low seed count.

I grew this variety again, this time from my own saved seeds. It’s one of my absolute favorites among the bi-color oxhearts. Extremely beautiful hearts, and they are as sweet as candy!

Just a heads-up, there is also a solid red version called Tante Gretels Rote Hüte (Aunt Gretel’s Red Hats).

It’s an indeterminate, growing up to 6.5 ft (2 m) in a greenhouse. Mid-season. The fruits are solid red, weighing between 5-10.5 oz (150 to 300g). The flesh is dense, meaty, with tiny seed chambers. Very tasty and sweet. Yields are great, best pruned to 2-3 stems. An excellent all-purpose tomato.

Aunt Gretel’s Magic Hats — indeterminate, mid-season maturity. A stunningly beautiful variety. The fruits are very ornate, heavily ribbed with an elongated pointy tip. My largest ones reached 9 oz (250g). The flesh is juicy yet dense. The taste is excellent! Highly productive!
