Quick Summary of Thessaloniki (Saloniki)

  • 🌍 Origin: A famous Greek heirloom that is highly respected and widely grown by Russian and Eastern European gardeners, who often refer to it locally as Saloniki or Fesaloniki.
  • 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), though its height heavily depends on the climate. In the colder Russian outdoors, it typically reaches about 1.2 m (4 ft), while some growers report even shorter, more compact bushes. The plant is notoriously sturdy, densely foliated, and shows excellent disease resistance.
  • 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Perfectly round, smooth, and uniform fruits. While classically red, some Russian seed lines produce a distinct deep raspberry/crimson hue. The average weight is around 200 g (7 oz).
  • 👅 Flavor & Quality: Known for a rich, perfectly balanced traditional tomato flavor. They are juicy and delicious.
  • Yield & Storage: Mid-season and highly productive. A huge advantage of this variety is that the fruits do not crack on the vine and store very well after picking.

I really liked these little tomatoes. The bush is just over half a meter (1.6 ft) tall. Smooth, even tomatoes. Almost perfectly round shape. When ripening, they become a deep raspberry color. Tasty, juicy tomatoes.
