Quick Summary of Topol (Топол)
- 🌍 Origin: A massive Russian heirloom variety (originally popularized by seed vendor V. Redko). The name translates to “Poplar tree”, fitting for its towering height.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), regular leaf, and extremely vigorous. In a greenhouse, it easily reaches over 220 cm (7.2 ft). Growers note that it is incredibly robust—it sets fruit early and does not drop blossoms (no blossom drop) even during severe temperature swings.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Giant, red, oblate (flattened) beefsteaks with prominent ribbing. They routinely weigh over 400g (14 oz) and can easily reach up to 1 kg (2.2 lbs) under good conditions. Pro Tip: Make sure to use heavy-duty support strings, as the sheer weight of the fruit can snap standard twine!
- 👅 Flavor & Texture: Exceptionally delicious. The flesh is incredibly meaty, dense, and juicy with very few seeds. It has a “melt-in-your-mouth” texture. Flavor profiles range from a perfectly balanced classic tomato tang to pure, acid-free sweetness depending on the grower and soil.
- 📈 Yield: Rated as a super yielder.
Topol – indeterminate, tall variety, growing in the greenhouse. The height is already 220 cm (7.2 ft), with regular leaves. It set its first truss among the very first in the greenhouse, and there was absolutely no blossom drop, despite sharp increases and decreases in temperature.
Under the weight of the fruits, my support strings actually snapped, so I had to re-tie it all over again. As of today, there is already a very good harvest on the bush; I couldn’t even fit them all in the camera frame. It continues to bloom and set fruit.
My Topol is from V. Redko, here is her description:
“Tall. A very large tomato ranging from 400g up to 1 kg (14 oz – 2.2 lbs), red, oblate fruits with large ribs. Amazingly delicious. Very meaty and juicy, very few seeds in the fruit. It just melts in your mouth. Super yield!!!”
I will write about the taste this weekend.
This is probably a dream come true… 😄
Marisha, how many stems are you pruning it to?
I pruned it to three stems, it kind of decided to grow that way on its own 😄. As for a dream—I don’t know yet, I have a lot of new varieties I need to compare it with 😉
Seeds were from LANA_S_KAVKAZA. Svetochka, thank you so much for this incredibly delicious, handsome guy 🌹

I paid attention to this bush even when there were no tomatoes on it yet. A powerful, handsome plant! It grew quite a lot of large fruits. And the tomatoes themselves are also very beautiful. And very tasty! Completely sweet with no acidity.
