🍅 Quick take: Marmelad Zholtyi (Yellow Marmalade) is an early-season Russian variety officially listed as a determinate. It produces uniform 3.5 oz (100 g) yellow fruits with a sweet-tart flavor, making it great for canning. While it stays compact outdoors, one greenhouse grower noted that saved seeds eventually adapted and produced vines over 6.5 ft tall. Very reliable setter. Full summary ↓

Description from the seed packet:

Ultra-early determinate variety, 95-105 days from germination to first harvest. Good for outdoors and hoop houses. Plants grow 2.6-4 ft (80-120 cm) tall, require staking and pruning. First truss appears above the 6th leaf, then every 1-2 leaves after that. Fruits are flat-round, yellow, medium size around 3.5 oz (100 g), 4-6 locules, very attractive. The flesh is medium-firm, tender, and sweet due to high dry matter and sugar content.

Loved it. Grew it outdoors, plant stayed around 2 ft (60 cm) tall. Pinched a few suckers in early June and then just let it do its thing. The tomatoes ripened up all in a flush in the second half of August. If we’d actually had a decent summer, they would’ve colored up earlier.

Mostly used them for canning. The bush was loaded, very uniform and neat tomatoes. Taste is decent, nice sweet-tart balance, a solid 4 out of 5. Definitely planting this one again next year 👍

Yellow Marmalade. One of my earliest producers. Growing it in the greenhouse. Original seeds were from Popenko.

The first year it wasn’t too tall, maybe around 4 ft (1.2 m). But I’ve been planting from my own saved seed for two years now, and the plant has gotten noticeably taller. Maybe it’s because I started them earlier the last couple of years, plus fall held off a bit longer this season. It’s still setting fruit even now, obviously not as heavily as in the summer, and the vine is already over 6.5 ft (2 m) tall.

One of the few varieties that keeps its sweetness no matter the weather or how much you water.

Full Summary: Plant, Yield, Taste and Storage

  • 🌿 Plant: Originally a determinate variety meant to stay around 2.6-4 ft (80-120 cm). Outdoors, it can stay as compact as 2 ft (60 cm). However, when grown from saved seed in a greenhouse, it can adapt and grow like an indeterminate, reaching over 6.5 ft (2 m).
  • 📈 Yield: Heavy producer. Sets fruit reliably even late in the season.
  • 👅 Taste: Consistently sweet with a nice tart balance. Highly rated for maintaining its sweetness regardless of rainfall or watering habits.
  • 📦 Usage: The uniform 3.5 oz (100 g) size makes it an excellent choice for canning and processing.
