📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Amarillo & Amarillo Armadillo
- 🌍 Origin: This thread covers experimental/numbered breeding lines sent to Russian growers simply as “Amarillo”, as well as the named exotic variety Amarillo Armadillo.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate (tall), regular leaf. Very vigorous and highly productive. The Armadillo variant grows to about 1.6 m (5.2 ft) when grown outdoors in open ground.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics:
- Amarillo (Stabilized Line): Produces perfectly smooth, round, beautiful plum-shaped fruits in large clusters.
- Amarillo Armadillo: Produces round fruits weighing 100-150 g (3.5-5.3 oz) in trusses of up to 10. The coloration is incredibly striking: a metallic bronze base with shades of pink, dark yellow, and green.
- 👅 Flavor: Both variants are praised for their sweet taste. The Armadillo line features a complex, sweet flavor profile with distinct exotic/fruity notes.
A few years ago, I was sent a whole batch of different “Amarillo” lines under various numbers. They kept changing and genetically segregating. And for several years now, this handsome guy has been growing consistently for me. It is very productive and beautiful. I absolutely adore it. Indeterminate. Regular leaf. The fruits are smooth, round plums. Very tasty.
I have another one from that batch. But it is still segregating and changing. The plum shape is larger. Darker. Almost black.
I also have this one called Amarillo Armadillo. Height is up to 160 cm (5.2 ft) outdoors in open ground. The fruits are about 100-150 g (3.5-5.3 oz), round, with up to 10 fruits in a cluster. The color is bronze with shades of pink, dark yellow, and green. The taste is very interesting and sweet, with distinct exotic fruity notes.
