📌 Quick Summary (TL;DR): Tony’s Italian Purple
- 🌍 Origin: Heirloom originating from Italy. Known for its dark color and ability to pump out multiple harvests.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indet. A very slender, wispy plant with slightly curled leaves. Because it doesn’t have a massive footprint, it is perfect for tight spacing or tucking right up against the greenhouse wall. Usually tops out around 5.5 feet (1.7 m).
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Beautiful dark purple/mahogany plum tomatoes. They average around 3.5 oz (100 g) and have a surprisingly good shelf life for a dark variety.
- 👅 Flavor: Very juicy flesh with a flavor profile that leans heavily to the sweet side.
Tony’s Italian Purple
Italy.
Such a skinny little plant, absolutely gorgeous, and a super heavy yielder. It actually manages to give you two flushes of fruit. After you pick the first round of ripe tomatoes, it manages to set and size up brand new trusses. Even up here in our short Northern summers, you can get a second ripe harvest out of it.
The fruits are dark plums, averaging around 3.5 oz (100 g). The flesh is juicy and definitely leans on the sweet side. It has a pretty good shelf life too.
The bush is very slender, and the leaves curl up a bit, which is probably just a trait of the variety. My plants in different greenhouses weren’t very tall, they stopped right around 5.5 feet (1.7 m).
Because of its size, you can easily tuck these right up against the wall.
It’s an early variety, I highly recommend it.
