Quick Summary of Pertsevidniy Cherniy (Black Pepper)
- 🌍 Origin: A Russian heirloom variety. The seeds in this thread trace back to the collection of Russian tomato breeder/collector Kholyavko. The name translates to “Black Pepper-shaped”.
- 🌿 Plant Habit: Indeterminate, tall (reaching up to 2 m / 6.5 ft). Suitable for both greenhouses and open ground.
- 🍅 Fruit Characteristics: Dark crimson to chocolate-brown in color with a shiny, slightly uneven surface. They have an elongated “pepper” or phallic shape (similar to the famous Auria tomato). Early fruits on the bottom clusters can be quite wide, resembling sweet bell peppers. Weight is up to 200 g (7 oz).
- 👅 Flavor & Texture: This is a classic paste/processing tomato. The flesh is very dense, meaty, and “dryish” (low moisture/gel).
- ⏳ Maturity: Mid-season. Displays good shelf life.
- 💡 Pro Tips for Growing: Because it is not overly juicy, it is absolutely perfect for canning whole in jars. Growers love mixing it in jars with other elongated colorful varieties like Auria, Casady’s Folly, or Banana Legs for a beautiful visual presentation.

What is the taste like? Is it inferior to Black Icicle (Chernaya Sosulka), which is praised for its taste?

Zulya, they are different, Icicle is meatier and juicier, and this variety is akin to Auria, a bit dryish, better for canning/pickling. They have a similar shape and consistency to Auria, only the color is chocolate.
Lenochka, please remind me – who were the seeds from? :mail:
You mentioned it somewhere, but I forgot :-[
