A new variety created by Dale Thurber through the cross-pollination of two large-fruited varieties: Hoy x Delicious. It is named in honor of AH Scorpii, a red supergiant in the constellation Scorpius, which has a radius of about 1,411 times that of the sun and is one of the largest known stars.
It is one of nine varieties created by Dale and named after various stars. Dale sent it to me for testing, and it proved to be genetically stable. It’s a mid-season, tall, indeterminate variety. The stem is powerful and sturdy, and the plants are very healthy. The fruits are exceptionally large, weighing up to a kilogram (2.2 lbs). Interestingly, the fruits on the lower trusses are broad and flat-round (oblate), while those on the upper trusses are rounded-heart shaped (blunt hearts). Meaty, sweet, and with very few seeds.

Mine reached 990g (2.18 lbs) in the poly tunnel, and there were several fruits on the plant. Maybe if the plant channeled all its energy into just one single fruit, it would have been bigger.
